If at all possible you should travel to a shop that stocks a range of brushes. Handling them will help to a certain degree. Failing that, most online places will refund fully on any unused brushes.
Not many find that one brush will cover all options. The shorter loft brushes are very popular at the moment, for good reason. However, you may find that a longer loft brush floats your boat. One mans meat is another mans poison.
Sorry for adding confusion to your dilemma.
Good luck and enjoy!

Scipio,
If you're referring to a 2 inch difference in brush diameter, you are correct. That 2 inches doesn't make a lot of difference.
For starters, I'd look for a silvertip that can be used with both soaps and creams. The Simpsons (Chubby 1 or 2) is an obvious choice, although I have a Rooney brush (small) that is just as versatile. Vulfix may also make a brush that suits your tastes and is of reasonably good quality.
Take a look at the shaving brushes on Vintage Blades. That website contains lots of useful information about the height (loft) and diameter as well as a discussion of the compatibility of some brushes with soaps and/or creams."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain
