My time in the Marine Corps we had stenciles and such in which we put the first letter of your last name and the last 4 of your SSN on personel gear also if it were issue I would think it would have a NSN on it. NSN is a national stock number or a Mil-Spec somethind like Mil-B-#### which would mean Military Brush and a Number so my vote would be last name letter and last 4 of SSN.

    Default Curious Markings On Brush?

    Hello, Slamthunderide:

Thanks for that information. Go Marines!

Of course, your explanation makes sense. I like the reasoning. We're slowly creeping toward solving this mystery. At least I think we are.

Then again, the blasted numbers and letter could be simply the manufacturer's or the store's stock identification. Now, that I find disappointing, because it makes the whole mystery fizzle into a puff.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's keep at it.

    Regards,

    Obie

When I was on active duty it was common to use an inexpensive
boar brush to keep our weapon clean of dust, sand and grime.
In boot camp there was a TOE budget of materials for each company
and that included cleaning kits and supplies. A shave brush was not
on the TOE. We all bought one at the post exchange (also
    a puck of Williams).

Stencils cutters were common and we marked everything from
brooms, dust pans, personal kit like a duffel bag and name strips
on our uniforms. Stuff had legs.... and you always watched for strangers
sniffing out stuff in your area.

So, either stencils and a serial/product code, or stencils and a combination of first inital of last name, and last 4 SS digits...

Those sound viable, I'd lean towards the second
