    Default How they do that?

You don't see it very often on brushes these days but on old ones they say either sterilized or sanitized. We always tell people to avoid using harsh chemicals on natural hair and don't use boiling water so how did they do that years ago? Come to think about it how do they do it now also?

Default How I would do it

My father's pre-WW II StrongSet shaving brush says "Sterilized" above the name on the handle. This is only a guess on my part, but I would assume that they sterilized the hair--perhaps using a steam process--before they assembled the hair into the handles. Make sense?

In the good old day in the tattoo business the saying was, "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance. baffle them with B/S." So maybe the 'sterilization' went as far as printing the word on the handle.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have barbicided my brushes before with no ill effects... I think there are probably many ways to sterilize badger hair, the trouble is not messing up the epoxy/knot/handle.

They get the badgers really drunk. So drunk that the alcohol seeps out their pores and over the hairs, thus sterilizing them. Hence "drunk as a skunk..." er... wait... Yes, today's badger was historically called "skunk."

    Gentlemen:

I would assume sterilization was done with some mild chemicals or some good old soap and water. The language of hype and advertising does tend to lean toward cavalier claims. I doubt things will ever change.

What they do is they ask the badger nicely, and when it refuses they threaten to take away its X-Box and eventually, after much nagging, it'll go and....

    ... have a bath!

This is great guys. If Holli's right then I think we could make one out of my locks (the ones on my head that is) and consider it sterilized!
