I love the finest silvertips. I had a chance to try one at Lynn's place, and I'm going to order one as soon as I can afford to.
Nessmuck,
BEBerlin ranks them quite highly, as shaving brushes go.
I just ordered a H. Thater from SRD. It should be arriving at my domicile shortly. Once it does I'll break it in and let you know how it is.
"Quite highly" does not describe it properly. When I first tried one, I was so impressed, I told Lynn that these should be made available to the American market. Took me about 18 months to get him to order one himself. Through SRD, they are now available at extremely attractive prices, for which you guys should be thankful to the old boys.
As far as their finest badger line goes, you will be extremely hard pressed to find anything that will match the bang-for-buck factor of a Thäter. The bristles have the backbone of a boar or pure badger, but the tips have the softness of the finest of the finest. This will give you the ability to lather soaps and creams alike, while obtaining the comfort you would expect from whatever your current favourite is - and beyond. The shape of the handles is optimised for ergonomics - you will have to have held one with moist fingers to appreciate that, but you will not be disappointed.
In a nutshell, I would recommend a Thäter over any other brush I know (and that includes Simpson, Rooney, Shavemac, Plisson, and Thiers Issard).
Regards,
Robin
PS Just for the record, German does not have a th-sound, and therefore, the "Th" in Thäter is pronounced like a "t", not a "th".
Well, I have on on the way from Germany however due to the problems with that Volcano it might be Xmas before I get it.
I've been interested ever since Robin first posted on them months ago but I like a bit of scritch in a shaving brush. Do any of their line offer the celebrated scritchy feel that some of us like ?
I, too, got to try Lynn's Silvertip Thater...
If you can afford it, BUY ONE. IMO it does beat Rooney, Simpson, and any other ones I've tried so far... Really, they are phenomenal brushes and I can't wait to get one of my own... Absolutely sublime on the face
Gentlemen:
I have the H. L. Thater 4125/0 22 mm. silver tip on order and will give you my humble thoughts when it arrives next week. I can't wait to try it.
Are you listening, my dear Robin?
Thus far all my friend Robin's recommendations have been a hit. I know this shall be, too.
Regards,
Obie
I have only ever used a Shavemac once, so I cannot say anything about them. Thäter brushes have more backbone than the Plissons I have tried (three European whites), and I like the way they feel on my face better overall. Plisson are incredibly expensive, and I have never understood why, really.
That said, I find it almost impossible to give a recommendation for anyone else. All I can say is that I like them immensely, and SRD's prices offer a tremendous value for money.
Gentlemen:
Today my shave caught a kiss from an angel: the H. L. Thater 4125/0 22- mm. silver tip.
This is a sweet brush, oh, yes: silky soft, yet barrel chested with hearty and dense backbone. The brush feels small for a 22 mm., but its plume takes wing with misty lather. And I love the squared off, ergonomic handle.
Today an editor, after several months of delay, decided to pay me for an old article. Thank you. A portion of the payment went to Straight Razor Designs for my second H. L. Thater, the 4125/1 24 mm. silver tip.
You see, gentlemen, angels do know something about making a day good.
Regards,
Obie
Obie,
I noticed this about my 21mm also. I am guessing it is because they are packed so dense.
I have a 24mm on its way also....
BTW, After using an Edwin Jagger Medium Best for almost a year and then the $42 thater. I would go with the thater over the EJ. It just easily generates lather with anything I throw at it and the price is about the same(depending on $ to euro and shipping)
Obie, for what it's worth, I love your writing voice... "silky soft, yet barrel chested with hearty and dense backbone", "its plume takes wing with misty lather." Absolutely brilliant command of language.
Just figured I'd tip my hat. You deserve it.
cheers,
Jeremy
My dear Slartibartfast:
Thank you for your note.
So right you are about this brush being densely packed. It is fabulous brush in every way: workmanship, body, texture, water retention, and anything else one can throw in the mixture.
This morning I was completely taken aback at how well this brush performed. I loved the feel of it on my Hollywood face. I have several different brands of brushes, including Edwin Jagger, Semogue (silver tip) and Vulfix, and I feel they are no match for the Thater.
I am ecstatic with this brush. It is lovely. That's why I had to order my second one — in case the world comes to and end.
The H. L. Thater is a noble brush.
Regards,
Obie
Obie,
I'm a bit of a brush junkie and as one who occasionally "must have" a this or that, just ordered a Thater based on its recently divulged reputed excellent qualities. This will be interesting as my last brush was also a "must have" of considerable reput, Plisson by name, and one which sheds so well that I'm worried it soon will develop a tonsure.
Great expectations await the arrival of the silks and barrels Thater, lather slinger.

My dear Bruce:
I had seen these brushes sometime ago at Different Scent, a site to which Robin had introduced me, and come away with a good gut feeling about them. Robin had spoken well of them — and I have high regard for his opinion. Finally, when SRD began carrying them, I realized no change in my gut feeling, and went ahead and ordered the 22 mm.
Oh, my, talk about my gut feeling deserving a medal. Once in a while my gut feeling gets drink and bombs. Not this time, though, Bruce. If I were to name a favorite brush, my Thater takes a bow even with only one shave. I am truly delighted with the brush. I am curious to know how you will like it. Please post your thoughts when your brush comes in.
Regards,
Obie
First of all +1 to all of the comments about Obie's way with words. Truly a master of the written (and I am sure spoken) word.
Secondly +1 to Obie's comment regarding the Thater.
The thater 440 23 mm is my third brush. I don't like it..................... I LOVE IT, well, as much as you can love a brush. I expected it to be good but it turned out to be great. Both of my other brushes are pure badger and what a difference with the silvertip. It's stif,f yet soft. I can't put it any better than Obie. So I'll just leave it at that.
My dear Rmaldon240:
How kind you are for the nice words. Thank you, sir.
I rarely use the same brush, or razor, on two consecutive days. I'll make an exception with my new Thater and use it again tomorrow.
Today I used it with Harris cream (not one of my favorites). Tomorrow I will use it Provence Sante Verlaine and see if I get the same results from the brush.
Regards,
Obie
Obie you have no idea how your post is killing me here. I bought a Thater chubby 3 and mine is sitting in some shipping crate in Germany waiting for that Volcano.
My dear Thebigspendur:
That's right, the volcano. I forgot all about that. Ooh, that's a tough one, and here I am ranting and raving about these brushes without realizing some gentlemen have ordered them from overseas.
Maybe if we all smile at the volcano gods . . .
I look forward to reading your thoughts on the Thater "chubby." I bought my Thaters from SRD; however, they don't seem to carry the "chubby."
Regards,
Obie
Obie, the Different Scent site actually lists 3 types of chubbies - one clear handled, one blond and the third with black handles. The 3rd is the 4125. You may be happy to know you actually have the Chubby I.
I have had issues with my Rooney 3/1. I am probably going to get a refund on it and replace it with a 4125/1 in 22mm or 24mm. For those of you that one one of these brushes is this model recommended? Which size would you get? Will this brush work equally well with shaving creams, soaps, face lathering, and bowl lathering. Thanks for the help.
And measurements of the handle and loft height would be nice. The websites quote only the knot diameter and total height.
Hello, Altshaver:
On its maiden shave, I used my Thater with D.R. Harris shave cream. Tomorrow I will use it with soap and express my thoughts.
My experience using brushes has shown me that a good brush can switch equally well between soap and cream.
Mine is the 4125/0 22 mm., a relatively small brush, but she is a beauty. I have a 24 mm. on the way.
Regards,
Obie
Gentlemen:
On the second shave with my new Thater 22 mm. (Chubby I, I'm to understand), I used soap. Yesterday, the first day, the honor went to cream.
The brush soared with both products. As you well know, soaps and creams lather with some variation. Here, the brush handled both quite well.
Yesterday the cream was Harris' lavender. Today the soap was Truefitt & Hill's. The razor was the Dovo "Bergischer Lowe," the pre-shave John Allan's Slick Water, the balm Trumper's Coral Food, and the aftershave the traditional Pinaud Clubman.
Another good day, made possible especially by my new Thater brush. Gentlemen, I cannot say enough good things about the quality workmanship and the feel of this brush.
Regards,
Obie
The one I have on order is the plexiglass and black handle 26mm.
That's the one I got and used for the first time today. Mine is only 21mm. It is firm enough to craft lather, but I must say that it is one of the softest badger hair shaving brushes that has ever touched my face.
It will be in my regular shaving brush rotation from now on.
I ended up ordering a Thater 4125/0 last night. It is the 22mm knot "chubby" version I believe. I also bought an blue SRD brush scuttle. I am definitely looking forward to using these.
Be aware, the SRD scuttle isn't the large kind that you lather inside of... you either have to face lather, or bowl lather, then transfer the brush or lather to the scuttle... That being said, it's a FANTASTIC scuttle. Huge water basin for holding in the heat, and it fully encloses the brush-basin in a wall of warmth. If you can face lather, or transfer lather without gripe, you won't regret it at all.
And the Thaters are Daaaaamn fine brushes.
Thanks for the warning. I did some scuttle research and found that I would probably like a brush scuttle more than a "lathering" scuttle. I think it would just work better. Also, I am more of a face latherer. I have never had luck using a bowl. I always add just a tiny bit too much water. I am glad to hear that you like it. I have high, high hopes for the Thater also. If these brushes are as good as everyone says, then I might pick up a second.
Well, that's for sure, if the scuttle is only meant to hold the brush, not for lathering in, it keeps you warm a LOOOOT longer (That's why the oldest "Modern" scuttle, the Moss scuttle, is still a favorite). I myself bowl lather and find cold lather refreshing, so no scuttle here.. But soon one of the SRD ceramics... Either the Bulldog or the Bowl... I can't decide if the rounded lip on the bowl would get too in the way on my small brushes...
Anywho, the scuttle will serve you fantastically if you face lather and like it hot. The Thäter... Well, just read the thread :D You can't not love it! And when you get it, brag about it! ( http://straightrazorpalace.com/brush...tml#post582517 ) /end plug.
Cheers!
Jeremy
So, those of you who got the 22mm knot... how small would you say it is? Uncomfortably small, or just right for a small brush? My BAD is kicking up, and I'm thinking that, over the next year, I'll pick up a 22mm one for travel or small cups, a 23mm for every day, and a 24 for the times when I use my scuttle (And this is just my way of avoiding guilt... If I know there's a reason to have different ones, it isn't so hard to mentally defend getting more... Same premise as strops :D)
Anyways... Whaddaya think? Too small, just right, or something else?
Thanks
Hello, Jeremy:
The 22 mm. Thater is somewhat small, but not in a negative way. No, not at all. I have a Vulfix and an Edwin Jagger about the same size and they are some of my best brushes. Of course, I have small hands, so all fit nicely in my grip.
The density and the backbone of the Thater 22 mm. will surprise you. So will its capabilities for making luxurious lather. Most of all, the feel of the brush on the face is what makes the Thater top shelf.
I could not not be more pleased with my 22 mm. Now I can't wait to receive the 24 mm.
I, too, tired of my scuttle, a Georgetown, and passed it on to someone else. Now I lather in my pewter mug. I have about a dozen soaps in various mugs. I load the brush with the soap of the day (or cream, of which I rotate three) and create lather in the Pewter mug, which I use strictly for making lather.
To keep the pewter mug warm during the shave, I use a small porcelain terrine and hot tap water. It works.

Obioe
