    Default Mortar as soap bowl?

I went to shave this morning after unpacking from a move, and seemed to have misplaced/lost my muhle shaving bowl.
Since other people on the forum have had good luck, I headed over to Target to see if I could find something there. I found a heavy stone mortar and pestle for a good price. I almost bought it but thought I would check here to see if anyone had tried a mortar for making lather before.
I figured it would hold heat from hot water very well, and the rough inside should help grab the soap off the brush.

    Anybody ever tried one?

If it's really rough I would be concerned with it grabbing individual hairs and yanking them out of the knot or breaking them.

I use a Japanese miso soup bowl, the inside is unfinished...with pebbles like a basket ball. It does a wonderful job. As these folks suggest, you probably wouldn't one that's too abrasive.

All the above plus the thick stone material will cool off the hot water faster.

You can just use the lid of your shave cream/soap. I used to. Then I realised I preferred face lathering.

I use a plastic type mortar like you find in food places that they serve dips and salsas in and it work great

I have used a (somewhat related) laboratory crucible of about 6 oz capacity and it works just fine.
