I set my brother up with a starter kit and ended up going with a Franks finest. Needing an excuse to get one to try out myself, I figured I'd need one for travel so I bought two of them. All I can say is it is much better than I imagined. The finest is soft enough and is fairly firm as well. I can't speake on the silvertip but the finest is good in my book.

I have 4 of them, high value for money shaving brushes
I wonder the wooden handles have shellac or just wax in their surface?
@ Bruce: This is why you said to avoid the wooden handles? They have problems after few months?

Frank Shaving G5 Synth
Looks like the new fiber is something similar to Yaqi SK06 Horse.
But with nice handles.

Interesting. FS brushes were all the rage for a while. I had a couple of their big silvertips. Then price went up and quality went down. Virginia Sheng kind of took over that market niche, and then Larry (www.whippeddog.com) started selling a pretty decent brush for only a couple of bucks more than the Chinese brushes, and now I have 3 of his big 30mm silvertips in long handles, and I am liking them very much, using them every day. Meanwhile FS has not really been a contender. So it will be very interesting to see how these synthetic brushes perform, and sell. It looks like Larry has had to raise his prices quite a bit from when I bought mine. Mine were well south of $40 as I recall.
Chinese brushes can be a real crap shoot. FS was putting out a very nice brush for the money, then they got greedy and the market didn't like it much. VS was putting out a pretty good brush for a while, and maybe still are, but prices got a little out of hand. Typical Chinese brushes are kind of shoddy as you would expect, shedding prodigously, very cheap looking handles, poorly shaped and set knots, but it seems like there is always someone putting out a good one. Just have to see who is hot and who is not.
Anyway if you pull the trigger on one of those synthetics, do let us know what you think of it.

Thanked: 603I also have a "Frank" shaving brush... albeit, different. I bought it in April, 2007, from the B/S/T forum on B&B. Originally, it was boar's hair, but way past its expiration date. I sent it off to Shavemac, and Bernd worked his magic, returning the Sterling-silver handle with a wonderful 10mm knot, in Silvertip badger. I have no idea who "Frank" was... neither did the seller.
