Speaking of mugs ...

Being new to all this, I have a question about mugs and thier proper use. Last year I purchased my first shaving brush and some Williams shaving soap. I came home and found a thick old coffee cup, threw in the puck and got busy. I have since aquired a couple of shaving mugs and other soaps.

On some online stores and e-bay, I have seen many styles of "mugs". Some look like regular cups, some have spouts and some look divided into sections. I was given a cup by a friend that they found at a yard sale that is the divided style. In fact, it is divided in the middle but one half only goes part way down. The other half has a puck of soap in the bottom. Is see no way to get the puck in or out without destroying it. (It needs to be replaced.) I really don't see any way to even get a brush down to it to lather up! How would you use this and what is the short half for? Also, what is the spout used for on some of these other mugs I've seen. Are some of these metal ones I've seen better?

It sounds like you are describing a SCUTTLE. Scuttles were used before running hot water was readily available. Boiling or hot water was poured into the bottom. The soap was kept on top. Generally, the top portion has drain holes. The brush could be dipped into the "spout", then worked on the soap to create lather. If I'm understanding your post correctly, it sounds like someone pushed the soap into the bottom section, probably unaware of how to use it properly.

Or failed to clean it successfully after the soap dripping from above continued to accumulate.

Thanks, Now I understand how one of the scuttles works. Would you just leave the puck in the top part until It's used up or I guess you could chance it depending on what you wanted to use that day?

1. Start a User Gallery and put the pictures there using the User System (at the bottom of the page).
2. Right click the image when it's loaded and you're viewing it and select 'Copy Image Location'.
3. Then return here and click on the little 'Inset Image' icon and paste the info in there. That should do it.
