Default Horse hair on a shaving brush

Many years ago I was using horse hair to make western style hat bands. The left over I used to make a shaving brush from elk horn and horsehair. It worked for me, the only thing I did not like it was kind of limp like a noodle. Now days I have custom made silver top badger shaving brushes. My best shaving brush is a cheap Col. Conk badger from the wrong side of the badger. This brush with Proraso makes a great lather. So, if you cannot afford an expensive shaving brush, use what you can afford and enjoy the shave. I am going to try to find that old horsehair shaving brush and give it another try. Juan.

Right this might sound weird but i have a border terrier and considdered next time she gets a trim washing some of the hair and making a brush from it, purley for the try it and see point of view, she has a wiery coat but not to rough so thought it'd at least be a fun experiance and i'd get a personalised product.

Go for it, it could not be any worse than horse hair. If I could get enough hair out of my dachshund I would make a shaving brush. Thanks for the idea. But seriously there most be other hair material that could be used to make brushes. Horse hair has been used as furniture stuffing, weaved in belts, hat bands, blankets and who knows what other products. I used horse hair because I had left over hair and an elk horn on hand, just experimental project that I actually used and it worked, not as good as badger brushes, a fun project. Juan.

Horsehair is actually a traditional shaving brush material, it went out of use due to Anthrax concerns.

There are makers in Turkey and Spain that still make horsehair shaving brushes and they get good press. I just ordered one from Span myself, so I have some high hopes.

You have to let me know how that goes! I have a Shih-Tzu, maybe in the spring when she gets a haircut...

Hmm, sort of odd you would find a horse hair on your shaving brush. You didn't use it to shave a horses face did you? Sometimes,... oh I see now, you mean a horsehair shaving brush.

i bought a horse hair brush a while back from a spanish site, i found it a bit hard compared to badger/boar, but it was ok after a good breaking in.
