Thread: What is 2 band?

I am shopping for a new brush in SRD and came across the Simpson Chubby 3 - Two band. (super badger)
They also offer a best badger version that does not specify the number of bands. I found many interesting posts that explain the differences between fine vs. super badge

Can someone shed light on what "Two Bands" mean?

Two different colored bands of bristle visible above the handle as opposed to three. Two band dark at the handle with white or off white tips and three band white, dark and then white again at the tips. In general two bands are more scritchy and have more backbone than three banded brushes. I prefer them for that reason though not everyone will agree with that assessment. For my particular skin sensitivity that is the way it has worked IME. YMMV.

I have to say that there will be an occasional two band that will have a slight bit of white on some if not all of the hairs at the base, but no where near a true white band.

Unfortunately there is a lack of standards when it comes to grades. Most of the terms supposedly describe different grades of hair but two band really is a physical description which can mean many things.

It's a sub grade of silver tip and has always been in limited supply and lately is an inferior product. To my knowledge the only makers selling the original stuff were Simpson, Rooney and Plisson. Rooney doesn't use it anymore and Plisson sells less and less. All of a sudden everybody is selling two band. It's a different product inferior to the older stuff. Original 2 band has very different characteristics. Usually a lot of backbone yet soft and scrubby. You either love it or hate it.

actually all banded knots are 3 band knots,it depends on the loft of the knot as to what you actually see when the knot is set.
I:E you can set a grade A silvertip knot, as a face lathering brush at say a loft of 46mm and only see two bands.Or you can set the same knot as a bowl latering brush at say 55mm and see all 3 bands.
The so called two band knots are stiffer and feel coarser because more of the knot is bound by the handle (set deeper at a lower loft.
