Thanked: 43Cost-effective (cheap) shaving bowl substitute I found
So in making the rounds with the soon-to-be Mrs., I came across this little dandy:
Footed Soup Bowl | Crate&Barrel
It's just a simple soup bowl, but has an inward facing lip that is perfect for lathering in the bowl. Good sized - maybe a little too large for some. Fits well with the decor when you have to share your shave den with the little lady. I just fill the bowl and submerge it in a sink full of hot water and soak my brush inside while I shower. Empty the bowl, lather, and the lather is nice and warm for the first pass, and the second pass still is a little warm too. Just an idea for those not excited about spending $40 on a scuttle.
Just wanted to share my findings.

Hello, smreno70:
I have seen those soup bowls at Crate&Barrel. They are roomy. If the bowl works for you, then you've made the right choice. It's called improvisation.

Obie

I too discovered a soup bowl yesterday. It was one I had in the cupboard. I was no happy with the dish I was using as it was small and V shaped so lather was always flowing over the edge. I was looking at some Scuttles and stuff and thought hmmmm. I have a set of French Onion Soup Bowls. They are stoneware and designed to be baked so really take the ehat and hold it in. So i filled one full of boiling water, had my shower and whipped up a lather. This thing really kept the lather warm. Only issue I had was some slight drying out of the lather which was probably more my technique than the bowl.

I have a soup mug from a local restaurant and it is very over-sized and would make the perfect shave mug but my wife won't let me within 6 feet of it. Every time she sees me looking at it she makes some smart remark. The thing is I don't even need it for shaving.
