Thanked: 48simpsons rover le
just got the simsons rover limited edition from west coast and it smells like moth balls. not a bad brush if I could get over the smell. instead of being a new make of an old classic it seems more like the old classic coming out of storage. is this normal?

Thanked: 3Hmm. I don't know...haven't purchased a Simpson yet. It is normal for a badger to smell at first. If it's not the regular badger smell maybe it's something they do as part of their sterilization process? If it is the regular badger funk it will go away after a few days. I just lather a couple times without shaving, let it sit in the soap lather over night and rinse. Most of the funk is gone at that point and the rest leaves within a few shaves. Let us know how it shaves, I have been eyeballing that one!

Yes it will just go away over time. If it bothers you that much some gentle shampoo should do the trick.

+1 on thebigspendur's advice. All new brushes will have a prickly feel on the face at first.
Over time and with use, the tips of the bristles will soften.
As for the smell. Soak the brush for 10-15 minutes in a mixture of warm water and shampoo. I use baby shampoo.

Thanked: 48Sorry guys, my bad
Is there any way to post directly to the site or do you need to post it to a url and link it?
The Plisson is my favorite and came smelling like lavender, the Rooney is a bit stiff and tends to push the cream around instead of massaging it in and came smelling like a pipe, the SRD is my first and came smelling like wet dog, and the Rover I enjoy but still smells like mothballs and the hairs are pretty wavey. I have a Shavemac Super on the way which I am excited about. Would like that new 2-tone whatever it was that everyone was recently getting excited about that is only available in europe.Last edited by groovyd; 08-14-2011 at 05:53 PM.

Thanked: 1195Wow, that Rover sure bloomed into a nice looking brush. I took a look at the factory pics on WCS's site, and the loft wasn't that big. Once you get rid of the smell and break it in I'm sure you'll have a great brush. Congrats!

Probably the worst brush, cleaning wise I ever had was my Thater. It wasn't that it smelled bad, it didn't but when I initially cleaned it in some Borax garbs and garbs of this pasty beige colored gunk kept coming out of it and that stuff smelled bad.
That Rover is an attractive brush.
