a scuttle can be a great way to have warm lather throughout a shave, some say you can get hot lather, others say warm....but either way, with a scuttle...it will be warm for sure and feel great....as for the brush...a simpsons best badger should do just fine on a heavy beard...they are among the best shaving brushes!

There are a lot of good brushes out there and simpson is certainly one of them. OTOH, the diameter of the knot and length of the loft are important considerations in how the brush will feel/work. For instance a short loft, in the 48 to 50 range is better, I find, for pucks of soap, while a longer loft , up to 58 or so is better for creams. The diameter will add backbone and density as the size increases. One of the problems with shaving brushes is that you don't know how they will feel until you try them. Good thing we have the classifieds in case a brush turns out not to suit us.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Check out the Dirtybird Pottery Scuttle. I have the 1.5 and I dig it. More warm lather than you can use in one shave! I had a dribble port added to mine.

Mind if I ask what the dribble port is for? I saw one of your other discussions on dirtybird, checked out her website, watched her scuttle making videa, and I want one. My Old Spice mug seems to be lacking now somehow... (can you say scuttle envy). Can you post a pic of the dribble port? I don't understand where the dribble port is or how it would be used.
    Thank you!

Hey Ducksfan. A dribble port is a small hole in the lather bowl of a scuttle which allows you to tip the scuttle slightly to allow more water into the lather bowl from the scuttle. This prevents you from having to dip your brush into the sink to add water to your lather if needed. The hole is near the top of the lather bowl. There is a video on You Tube showing a dribble port in action. If you do buy a Dirtybird, you'll love it. Julie does amazing work and can put the dribble port anyplace you want it. I left it to her when she made mine. PM me if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to help. I work nights and it will be a couple days before I will get a chance to take pics of my scuttle and post them, so check out the video.

Thanks Mike. That makes sense. I appreciate the info. I'm definitely going to get one. I'll check out the dribble port video. Sounds like the way to go!
    Have a good one.
