Just using it You can soak in some mild detergent first if you're looking to get rid of the smell. I basically just whip up a few batches of lather with any of my new ones and find that does the trick

As Catrentshaving says, a couple batches of lather is all it takes IMO.
I've gone straight to using them right out of the box as well, no worries at all

Just like ppl said above. Run some test lathers with some of your favourite soap. If you want to take my advice your more than welcome to. With any new brush, I always wash it with mitchells wool fat shampoo then hit it with some hair softening conditioner, usually dove. I find this washes out any junk that may be there from the factory and helps to get rid of the smell quick. Also the conditioner helps to soften those hairs up even more you don't need to use MWF shampoo, any shampoo will work!

I used to use the Classic Shaving Brush Cleaning powder but these days just some baby shampoo seems to work fine.

My standby for breaking in a new brush is to spend some quality time lathering up some Williams Mug soap.

I just use what ever shave soap I have on hand and build a thick lather 4-5 times and that will soften everything up and give the brush a clean smell
