i tend to just swirl the brush when loading and save the pumping for building lather in the bowl or on my face but now i'm thinging i may have to try pumping while loading the brush just to see if the results are any thicker lather

More a swirling-man, than a pumping-man. Good lord, I should not have written that sentence

Swirl with a little pressure, adding a few drops of water as required. Almost never pump on the puck, but will do if building in a bowl rather than face lathering

I hold the base of the knot with my fingers and thumb to give the brush more backbone while loading, but do not pump the brush on the puck. I also vigorously shake out all water of the brush and load the water softened soap. I will both swirl and pump while making lather as I add water to the scuttle.
