In General: I use swirling action to load or mix the product(s) and only use a pumping action to force air and water through the mixture when building up the lather in a Bowl or Scuttle...
I hold the base of the knot with my fingers and thumb to give the brush more backbone while loading, but do not pump the brush on the puck. I also vigorously shake out all water of the brush and load the water softened soap. I will both swirl and pump while making lather as I add water to the scuttle.
