Thread: brush from classic shaving hair falling out

Hello, I'm sure this has been discussed in great detail but i am unable to find posts on it. tried doing an advanced search for hair falling out but came up with nothing. so hear is my question.

i have had my brush for a while about late feb 2012. I have used it every day with a cream from classic shaving, then ran out of that and had to fall back on shick hydro aerosol can for about a week to wait for a taylor of old bonds street barber shop scent. and since starting to use this cream my brush has been shedding like mad i mean like ill make my lather and it will be whipped cream of badger hair. my routine has been since i received the brush has been soak in steaming water for about two min while i do my beard prep. then shake out completely and then re dampen and make lather. after making lather and shaving i rinse my brush hold it with bristles up under the faucet and shake very well. then i take a dry cloth and rub the brush on it to help in the drying process. i then hang it up side down and by the after noon its fully dry. when i first got the brush i noticed one and two hairs randomly and i know thats to be expected but a whole bowl full in one shave session. i know my water over here in south korea, camp casey is very hard and full of minerals.
what is the next coarse of action i should take to stop this problem or am i just doomed to by a simpson or a higher end brush.

two thoughts

1) maybe your water was too hot and it melted some of the glue

2) the Aerosol can has chemicals in it that are eating the binding glue

dunno about that one

May need to get a new brush and ditch the can of foam.

That happens. Just contact Classic and they will replace it for you.

didn't know they had a return policy like that. thats good to know ill check into that.

and also i did think it was to hot and started just using warm water instead of steaming water. and i only used the can stuff for like 5 days. so i hope it gets better until i can get another one .. thanks for the reply.

Yes, by all mean, get in touch with Classic Shaving and see if they can replace it. They are good people, so I don't think there will be a problem with the replacement.

I have a suggestion on the different matter regarding the brush, or your future brushes. You don't need to soak your brush in steaming hot water. From your description, that comes almost close to boiling water, which will damage your brush eventually. Just plain old hot water will do. Also try not to shake the brush as vigorously as you seem to do. A few gentle shakes are sufficient; then gently squeeze the hairs on the towel.

k thanks for the tips. ill just do look warm water. then try to use a skuttle to keep the lather warm. and i do shake that brush to death. thanks for the help
. off topic but kinda still on topic. would water softness or hardness to many minerals and such be bad for the hair, i mean dry it out?

I have never encountered problems with water mucking up the brush, so I can't comment on that. On the other hand, I think you're trying to analyze this too much, and throw in too many variables. That brush will eventually wear out after years of use. In the meantime, treat it with care and keep it clean and you'll be okay. Everything nice and easy.

I don't know, I have cheap Twezeerman brush and for the first few months it systematically lost few bristles every shave and after that it's stopped. Now I use this brush for more than 1,5 years and few weeks ago I started to soak my brush in almost boiled water while I'm shaving and still have no issues with my 3 different creams. BUT when I use my brush with l'Occitane cade soap it's always lose bristles, so maybe it have something to do with stiffness of the soap or cream.

I'm just thinking of things that might cause hairs to break off the epoxy that holds them together inside the handle.

When I'm done shaving, I rinse my brush by holding it bristles down under the faucet and gently massaging it till the lather is rinsed out. I give it a couple of shakes, then squeeze it in a towel. Then I hang it bristles down to let gravity help remove the water from the base of the hairs inside the handle.

I doubt that hard water would cause a brush to shed hairs and I honestly don't think that vigorous shaking would damage your brush. Just the same, a quality brush is a long term investment that should be cared for gently.

More likely, this is just one of the very occasional brushes that the hairs did not bond well to the epoxy or polyester resin used to construct the knot. If it keeps shedding hairs, by all means, contact Classic Shaving. I'm sure they would be more than happy to replace it.
