Thanked: 375Horse Hair Brush
Guys I made my self a brush handle earlier this year and installed a 24mm horse hair knot. Have any of you ever found a knot in your Brush knot? I was shaking the brush out after rinsing it and noticed a spot that is parted, after closer inspection, a bunch of the hairs are knotted and kind of matted in the middle. I take care of my brushes rinse them good and hang them up, ever happen to anyone else? Maybe I'll use a little conditioner and a comb to try and get get it out....
Or maybe it needs to go to to the horse groomer.....

I have had problems with knots and ratting with horse hair brushes too. I have tried about 6 or 8 different horse hair brushes, and had problems with two I think. I use horse/pure badger mix and there is no problem.

I've got a few horse hair brushes and find if I give them a good shake after rinsing, they dry out nice and fluffy.

I give all my brushes 20 shakes after rinsing. I reach behind the shower curtain and shake away. Then fluff lightly on a dry towel and put it away. Works for me.

Thanked: 375That's exactly what I do. I'm thinking maybe the hairs are so fine that swirling it around to load the soap or cream and then building the lather up, then to my face may have caused it. I don't always swirl in the same direction the whole time, apparently horse hair doesn't like that. Oh well, it still works just looks like it has mange, I have a spare horse hair knot in waiting. I'll try a comb and some conditioner and what happens...

They make shampoo/conditioner for horses (mane & tail), wonder if that would work?
I mean, I you think about it none of us would only wash our hair with just soap.
Who knows lol

Thanked: 375What is this thing you call shampoo/conditioner? I'm bald, sporting the chrome dome since I was in my 20's, a DE keeps it nice and shiny. Yeah, anyhow I actually do know what your talking about, I think I'll try the wifes products first before I drop coin on some mane and tail shampoo for horses, but good idea! If that doesn't work I may cut it out or just replace the knot, it's really not a big deal just wondered if anyone had it happen to their brushes.

Thanked: 0I had similar problem with my brushes. So I used comb for paint brushes which has long teeth, and restored these matted areas without losing too many bristles.

I have a Vie 13061 horsehair brush that I've been using for a couple of months now. It's demonstrating the same type of knotting as described above. I tried brushing it with a hairbrush, but the hairbrush bristles weren't stiff enough to do anything. I then tried a detangling comb. That worked a little bit better but one of the teeth on the comb bent (the Vie must have had some serious knots). I then tried a metal letter opener. All the knots are gone now, albeit so are a few hairs. I'm thinking, if I have to go through this every couple of months or so, before long I'll have a shaving brush with a nice handle but no hairs.
