    Default Hans Baier Silverpoint

I occasionally receive catalogs from a site called DeutscheOptik, from which I used to buy military binoculars (another of my oddball collecting hobbies). Anyway, in their current catalog they featured a Hans Baier silverpoint badger brush for $39. I figured, what the heck and ordered one. I received it yesterday and it looked, and felt, pretty nice. Gave it a shampoo/conditioner pre-treatment yesterday and used it to shave this morning. I must say, it seems to be a very nice brush. Anyone else familiar with this brand?

I used to get the DO catalogs and have bought a few things from them over the years and the one thing I can tell you is whatever they sell it's overpriced, way overpriced especially since that guy in Nevada took them over.

I don't know about the brush you bought but if it's a brush maker I never heard of him unless it's a vintage piece. Was it a military surplus item? They sell loads of that stuff now. In the past they have sold straights and DEs. The straights were french vintage pieces made for the military.

How about some photos. We all want to see.

I'll see if I can post a picture. I absolutely agree that DO is overpriced, especially after the takeover. The item is new in box, does not appear to be surplus. Don't know where they found them. Let me see what I can do photo-wise.

Hans Baier is a large German company, far from being "vintage!" They have a huge range of products, not just in the personal care markets. Just not well known over here, rather like the wonderful Morny soaps that are very well known in the UK but don't make any effort to sell here. (Think I'll get my daughter in London to send some over!)

I have the Hans Baier Silverpoint Badger brush and it is excellent: very like the Art of Shaving silverpoint brush but costs less (even from DO!) . Also their DE razor which is a well-made long-handled butterfly type. There is a non-silverpoint badger brush as well.

Correction: Hans Baier do specialize in shaving gear, it was the format of the ProductPilot page that made me think they had a much wider range. I don't think they do any direct retail (not on Amazon for instance). They are manufacturers selling to distributors - they can do private label. Their home site is currently baier-langenfeld.jimdo.com but it's clearly really geared to European trade customers. Review of their brushes have been very good (like mine.)

The pic looks like a nice 2 band. Any scritch to it ? Soft tips is good too as long as it has backbone one way or the other. I can't tolerate a floppy brush.

Thank you for the information, John. I am very pleased with the brush and have been using it pretty much everyday. Being a newbie I am no expert on anything, let alone brushes. I have 3 others but the Hans Baier is full and soft but not at all floppy (backbone?). It's larger than my others, both the handle and the brush. It feels good and I expect to get a lot of use from it tho...I have no doubt it is not my last brush.

I just got another DO catalog. Noticed they now have two Hans Baier brushes. Still one for $39: a pure badger now. The silverpoint that I got for $39 two months ago now lists for $89.

I recently bought my first Badger brush and thought it was an omega.
But I found out it is a Hans Baier.

    Very nice indeed
After 3 months you look like you've fought a cat, after a year you may say you get it.
After 3 years you are even better and as long as you live, you are becoming a expert...
