Thanked: 0High End Vulfix vs High End Rooney Brushes...
...Anyone have or tried either of these? How do they compare? I have a Vulfix #374 and I'm thinking of trying a small Rooney #1, but I want to know if I'm truly making a step up as the Rooney is $200. big ones. Thanks.

I don't own any Vulfix brushes (yet?), but I have a Rooney Style #1, Large, Super Silvertip (Rooney's second highest grade, below "Finest"). Here are some photos of it:
Here's the overalll brush, with its fan-shaped loft. It has a 26mm knot, and is ~4in. high.
This is a close up of the "grain" in the handle. It is very attractive, and is certainly a welcome change from the plain white poly/resin handles used mostly today.
Finally, here is a photo looking onto the loft to demonstrate density. The hair while soft, does exhibit some resiliance, and isn't really floppy.

Thanked: 346I don't have a vulfix, but I do have a Rooney small style 1, in finest grade.
Shaving image.
It's a pretty special brush that instantly cured an incipient case of SBAD. The brush is stiff but with very soft velvety tips. The tips aren't white but more like silverback beaver, only much lighter. The hairs are black to the base (the whitish color at the base in the photo is soap, they're black in person but the flash brings out the soap). Chris posted some close-ups of the handle, the finest have the same handle AFAICT. I've had mine for about 9 months and use it every day. It's built like a tank, it lost 2 hairs the first day and one about 6 months later and that's it. It is starting to lose a bit of the printing in the handle where it keeps getting knocked against the side of the mug.Last edited by mparker762; 11-27-2006 at 01:55 PM.

$200 seems very expensive for a Rooney #1 in small (the large in silvertip is only $150 at classicshaving).
I have a Rooney #1 large in slivertip.
My understanding is that the Vulfix brushes are generally floppier than roughly equivalent Rooney brushes.
If you want some help picking a brush, you will likely get better input if you tell us what you do/don't like about your Vulfix and what you're looking for.
Hope this helps.

Thanked: 9$200 is right on the money for a Rooney Finest small, I think. The difference in price between Silvertip / Super and Finest is more than double, from what I remember. Now, I think the brush actually costs less than 100 wholesale, but this is another story.
Cheers

My bad - thought we were talking about the plain old silvertip.
I like my #1 large silvertip - but I only paid $80 for it...
