I had the same experience with my Burma Shave.

I never even thought of using shampoo or

I have just bought a boar hair brush, with a soap mug, went to the bathroom to shave all excited, holy smoke what a stench, the smell was awful.

Glad its not just me, will try the conditioner trick then, will try again but without actually putting it nr my nose.

I've had the same thing with both Badger and Boar brushes. It does go away after you've used them a few times.

I've had horrid smelling Turkish horsehair brushes. A couple of lathers with a dish soap, some conditioner and the chance to air out seems to take care of it.
