Default Do all new brushes stink?

I just received my Edwin Jagger best badger brush and lord it stinks. Shampooed it. I've even used it three times with Mama Bear's Ye Olde Barbershoppe, but the smell is still there. Any advice?

Yeah they do have an odor. Just make a few batches of lather of your strongest smelling cream/soap and it will dissipate.

You know I was sitting here thinking of a joke (about my new 2 band skunk brush) but then I thought about tomato juice. I seem to remember hearing the use of tomato juice on yourself would help with the smell if a skunk got you or your dog. If I ever get a smelly brush I might try that. Not advising it just wondering !
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Can't say the any of the brushes I have bought new really stank to a noticeable extent. It might be that some people are more and some less sensitive to odours. I have a new brush coming and that may be the one that stinks, you never know.

    Sig84,

As the others have posted they pretty much all 'pen and ink'

Boar brushes generally reek more, though not always.

I have found the easiest way to de-stink, is to add about a tablespoon of baby shampoo (I use Johnsons) into a lather bowl, and make stiff lather making sure that the brush is thoroughly saturated with the lather. Every few minutes in a half hour period, pump the brush to move the lather about in the knot. Leave the lathered brush base down overnight, then rinse knot until the rinsate is not only free from soap, but is without colour. Repeat 'soaping' if needed.

    Have fun !

    Best regards

I have a horse hair brush and it stinks so bad that I was only able to use it twice before giving up on it. I will have to try the baby shampoo tip above. Can't hurt!

I double that! This normally works pretty well.

Try Oxi Clean. That chased away the smell from one brush that really stunk.
