Default Simpson Chubby 3 in Super Badger vs Heinrich L. Thater 28mm Two Band Finest

OK, here's the tale of the tape...

    Simpson:
    30 mm knot
    56 mm loft
    105 mm overall height
    Composition - Super badger
Cost - just north of $300

    Thater:
    28 mm knot
    52 mm loft
    102 mm overall height
    Composition -Two band finest badger
    Cost - approx. $200

    Questions:

    1. I am assuming the small differences in measurements are not meaningful. Agree?
    2. Is there any meaningful difference between "Super Badger" and "Two band finest badger", or is this just different appraoches to nomenclature?
    3. Is the Simpson worth half again as much as the Thater?

    Discuss....

Different mfgs name their highest quality badger with different names so the super versus finest is strictly nomenclature. IME the old 'Somerset' Simpson supers were scritchy (a good thing) and the chubby was a very densely packed brush. Not sure about the Vulfix made Simpsons from personal experience but I hear they are real good.

The Thater two bands have very soft tips and great backbone. No floppiness at all. Bang for the buck wise I think the Thater wins if you like soft tips and they are of the highest quality IMHO. YMMV bigtime.

Oh my, those are both stellar brushes.

I have a thing for Simpson brushes and feel they are worth the asking price, then again, my Thäter is a stellar performer as well.
In short then, if the size of the knot suits you, either will do a great job.

If you were talking the old two banders then that would be the ticket. However with the current crop I think the Thater brushes come very close and I think are finer than the Simpsons.

Take a look at the Simpson Manchurian brushes. I think they are the equal of the Thater in every respect.

Both those brushes get good reviews but the badger hair used might be different enough that their feel in use might be pretty different and not directly comparable. I have a Vulfix super badger with a small 20mm knot it is very different from my SOC 2 band badger 24mm knot. Simpsons do make 2 band badger brushes and that might be a better comparison. I do have a Simpsons Manchurian badger and it has a slightly different feel than the SOC 2 band in that it has slightly less backbone but both have soft tips. Of the two I prefer the Manchurian by a bit and you can guess which is more costly. I'm sure either of those two well respected brushes would be pleasing to use.
