Thread: Muhle Retro Brush

Anyone on here using a Muhle Retro Brush? If so what are you impressions of it? They look kinda interesting. Thanks.

I have a butterscotch Muhle Retro brush. Lovely brush. Up there in my top 5. Lovely and soft, much denser than your usual Muhle, beautifully crafted handle, enough backbone for face lathering and good flow through. I would definitely recommend it.

@Jodypress, is that a Chubby 2 that it is next to in the pic? In your opinion, how does the Retro compare to the Chubby?

Thanks for the reply, I had almost given up hope. The butterscotch looks very good. How does it compare to a 2 band badger for backbone? Glad to hear you like it for face lathering which is what I do.

That is indeed a Chubby 2 in super, next to a M&F with Rooney Heritage 2 band.

The M&F is probably my current favourite and is exquisite. Dense with firm backbone and gel like tips. The CH2 is the most dense brush I have. Not the greatest flow through but very luxurious indeed and really does feel like a wall of badger.

I only face lather, with croaps and creams. SMN, Proraso, Cella, La Toja etc. The Muhle Retro is up there with the other two I've mentioned.

Not as dense or with as much backbone but fantastic flow and builds a great lather on the face. It is a bigger brush than the other two but I enjoy it very much. Visually it looks gorgeous and feels so right in the hand, perfectly weighted.

To give you an idea, I generally do 5 passes. wtg,xtg,atg,xtg and finish atg. There is always plenty for 5 passes with the Muhle. Oh and with the retail at over half the price of a new Chubby, it's a steal.

I do have in the pass a Chubby 3. Nice bush but in my personal experience it was too much badger hair. Sometimes I just could not lather anything, and sometimes when I pass the brush in my face using the painting motion, the brush took the from of the face. The chubby 2 develop in the same way? Reason is because I was looking to get one in the future.
In the other hand I do have one Polo 10 2 Band and i have to say that, that one is my most important shaving brush it just perfect eventhou its 28mm. It does not develop as the chubby 3.
