    Default Kent brushs

    Hi everyone,

So 6 weeks into my straight shaving adventure and everything is going well.
So my trusty TOBS silvertip that predates my straight shaving is holding up well even when I have a go at soaps, so I'm now looking for a big soft luxurious brush to use just with my creams.

I like the look of the BK8 and BK12. Other than physical size what's the difference? Which would people say was better?

I'm also open to other brands but it has to be big and soft.

    Thanks.

"Better" is purely a subjective assessment. I agree with Ezekiel, the BK12 is just bigger. The BK12 was just too big for me while the BK8 is just right. They are definitely soft. Some find them to be a just a bit floppy but the 8 is fine for me and I face lather. It should be great for your use with creams. Another option would be the Shavemac 177 in silvertip. It's the next size smaller but has an even more pronounced bulb shape. The Shavemac is quite soft but seems to have a touch more backbone than the BK8. Incidentally, the BK8 has a slight amount of "prickly" feeling when dry while the Shavemac is dead soft. The difference is unnoticeable when wet.

I've only had a BK4 which I sold because it is just too soft with no backbone. At least my copy was. If you want soft and you face lather the Thater is the way to go IME. Do a web search for Kent brushes on shaving forums and "floppy" will come up again and again. This means no backbone. If that is what you are looking for get a Kent. If you want soft with backbone get a Thater. Shavemac is also a very good brush IME. I have a pure badger with a 48mm loft that is delightfully scritchy and a special bristle badger that is medium soft, plenty of backbone, and unfortunately not scrtichy. It is a 50mm loft. I don't care for large lofts. To each his own.

Very soft with some backbone sounds good will have a look at the Thater.
So the bk12 is a bit like using a wool mop on your face then?

I have had both hope this helps...
I still have the 4 and I just sold the 8. The 4 is softer on the tips than the 8. The 8 has much more backbone than the 4 but it is still soft compared to most brushes (the shavemac is softer and so is the Thater and so is the SR). The 8 I do not find floppy at all. The 4 lathers anything I have. It just takes longer to load the brush because of the lack of backbone.

I do not have the BK12 but I have heard it is a beast!
