Well about 5 years ago or so it came from a different hair source so it was a variation of silvertip. These days it's a variation also but nothing like the old stuff. It's been blamed on global warming and the particular hair isn't being produced by the animal any more.

The manchurian hair is the closest thing I've seen to the old stuff but it's still very different.

The Simpsons Manchurian I have is different from the SOC 2 band that I have. The 2 band has more backbone/stiffer with nicely soft tips while the Manchurian has enough backbone/stiffness but pillowy soft tips. The Muhle Retro 3 band is different again, backbone/Stiffness between the first two, tips not quite as soft as the first two and a tiny bit of scratchiness that the first two have none to speak of.

That is for those particular brushes which likely does not apply to other manufacturers similar models.

I find the Manchurian to perform the closest but if you hold the two in your hand they look different and feel different in every respect. So even though they are closest performance wise it's ain't close.

Wasn't saying it was close to the old stuff at all. Just trying to say that these are the differences between various types of silver tip available today that I think I can feel from personal use. Others using the same brushes may have a different take on how the feel. That is just differences in silver tips and not any of the other supposed grades. It is all pretty nebulous when it comes to badger and you just have to try many out to see what you really like.
