I actually have one of those pods just sitting on one of my shelves here for decoration. I wonder how you could seal it to keep the water out Would make a really cool looking brush handle if you ask me.

I often thought about getting some of these, to try an make a brush handle. But hesitated due to them being described as a nut. My daughter has nut allergies so not a good thing to have dust flying around with something like that. Can anyone clarify if it's a nut or just a seed pod?

They do not exsist in your local.
    Sierra Nevada?
I'm in the Santa Cruz Mountains...giant Redwoods everywhere. If these are the young 'uns, the old ones are sure to be beyond spectacular.

Not until I looked it up,seems that it can be a very toxic wood to some people.

Picked these up today from my wood supplier. A Banksia pod and a 2x2x16 Golden Amboyna burl scantling.

Gonna give the Banksia pod a go. Im thinking a tinted epoxy for filling the holes. Should be a fun challenge and should be quite messy. Apparently the Banksia pods shoot seeds from those large holes the second your lathe goes on. Im thinking 500 RPMs to start.
