No it's not a humongous brush haha. Just some playing around with my first lathe. Hopefully will be turning brush handles soon!

Thanked: 28Thanks. The wood (poplar) is a little rough almost looks torn out in places. Guessing that is from the chisels not being sharp enough?

Thanked: 2284Your correct. You should Google a technique called "riding the bevel." will help with finished cuts.

Scott, looks like you are off and running. Glad to see ya dove right in there. Just think that now you will need to buy a whole bunch of hones just for your turning tools. You can add those to all the hones for honing a straight and combine them to build a house!! LOL
Enjoy the toy!!

Thanked: 2027You just need a couple of cheap ceramic slips to keep HHS steel going, providing they are made from good steel,no differant than razors.
I used to turn alot of metal, you can tell everything from the way the metal comes off the workpiece as to if the bit is properly sharpend and the proper angles set.
With wood, not that big a deal,This is what you want to see,Nice chips on the softer woods, curls of wood on the harder woods.
If your seeing sawdust, your abraiding the wood, not actually cutting the wood.Hope this helps.
