Thanked: 2284Two tone, Tru stone
This is a brush I've had locked in my head, and every time I went through my material box, these 2 hunks of Tru stone would stare up at me saying "Make Me, Make Me, Make Me." So I finally did.
The red middle is "Red Dino bone" and the black is "Black and White Web"
Love the way this turned out, but hated how it performed on the lathe. Both the red and black pieces are considered to be hard to turn, and they were. I resharpened 2 separate gouges 3 times each through the whole shaping process. This stuff killed my edges on my HSS tools almost instantly. Wet sanding Tru stone is always a joy though. It sands very easily.
Really love the heft of this one and I thought I might keep it..... but someone spoke up on Instagram and now it's leaving here.... Darn.
Thanks for looking guys!

Kinda has the presence of a Grecian Urn
Tough on the tools, but worth it!
Another beauty!

Just when I design in my mind my next brush from you.
You unveil something completely new and different and it scrambles my eggs.
I am sticking to my guns for what I want for my next brush.
But the one after that ??? This stone thing has got my attention. How big of a knot could this material accommodate?Your only as good as your last hone job.

Thanked: 2284All my material, that isn't wood, is 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". I find a 24mm knot to be perfect for this size material, but I have fit as big as a 28mm knot in the same size stuff. Stefan (Mainaman) and Davids (Scarface) both had 28mm knots.
You have to keep the top profile slender, and then sometimes you can cheat, and wrap the design around the outside of the cup and go slightly under it. I did this slightly on Stefans brush. The key is not cutting through the outside and into the inside knot pocket/cup. I've done it before and cursed my way into hell. I was pretty pissed off that I got out of focus and did it. It was a piece of expensive wood that I got a bit too zoned out and actually sanded right through until the top completely popped off.
To answer your question, yes. Bigger knots can be used, but it depends ultimately on the design of the handle.
Also, I'm finding that Tru stone is getting harder and harder to find. I've bought up a few different blocks but there usually is a lot to choose from. I know you can order it from Masecraft, I've never ordered from there and have heard they have a minimum order quantity which I'm not sure I like. Don't quote me on that, I need to look into their Tru stone again.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....
