Recieved my Silvertip Standard knot from TGN earlier today. Nicely stuffed with Silvertip badger hair. I have read on several forums that this knot was prickly, scritchy, etc.

I have to say that I do not detect any of this in the one I have. To me it is nice and soft, comparable to their Finest in this regard, but with quite a bit less backbone. I set the knot at 50mm initially, using low temp hot glue. After the hot glue was well set, I soaked the knot in cold water for 5 or 10 minutes, then gave it a try on the old cheeks, using circular motions as well as painting strokes. Lovely soft, but too much flop. Popped the knot out, bored down 2mm, and reset with hot glue at 48mm. Much better. nice and soft, with a decent backbone for my tastes. Popped the knot out, cleared out the glue and let everything dry a couple of hours, and set with epoxy. In 24 hours, it will get it's lathering debut.

    Thanks for looking.

Good job at boring it out. I had no idea vinegar would soften animal hair. What is TGN? I want to replace the knot in the brush I just bought. It is a blue/white Ever Ready 200T, I think. What time span were these black/white and blue/white 200T's made? I want to get into buying old brushes and putting in new, terrific knots for me to use when I shave with a straight razor. I like the Ever Ready and Made Rite brushes.

Thanks! The vinegar would have been used to clean, not to soften. I used antibacterial soap because I was afraid vinegar might react with the patina of the brush.
TGN is The Golden Nib, a pen supply company who sells a lot of brush knots.
As for the Ever Ready brushes, they are vintage, but I hasve no idea how old they are. But they are fun.

Thanks. I will try to post my beginning to end on my first brush fix-up attempt. I need a adjustable double benchtop wheel. I need a mini lathe and turning tools, which I can buy online or at a woodworking store.

I look forward to that. I would recommend you read as much as you can in this forum. It has been invaluable to me in my small efforts to restore brushes.

I've busied myself reading lots of threads and immersing myself into this little side-hobby. My main hobby, which I am still trying to get started in because I am teaching myself, is woodworking, specifically cabinetmaking (that is what furniture making is called in Great Britain). It is not easy at all. Even getting the basic joints square and straight have proven to be pretty challenging. I want to do this, also, from time-to-time, when I want to add a brush to my rotation. I already have lots of razors in my rotation. I only shave with a straight about once a week. Later.
