Thanked: 2284Micarta shave brush.
Well, some of you had been following along in the workshop thread I started here http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...e-micarta.html and I just wanted to thank the guys who gave me some advice and support for this project to actually come together. So here's the final brush.
It's not completely perfect, and has some flaws, but for the first attempt I'd say I had a decent go at it.
Things I will be doing the same,
- I like the idea of making a 1" thick blank, cutting it into 2 pieces and adhering them together to get the full sized blank desired.
- My form and clamping system worked well and I think I'll try the same thing again
Things I learned and need to change,
- Nitrile gloves will dissolve using epoxy
- Instead of using just an epoxy to bond the 2 pieces, I will use 3-4 pieces of material soaked in epoxy and reclamp.
- make clothe pieces all the same size and take more care cutting the pieces of material.
I think next time I'll try 2 different colors of clothe and make a handle with many random flat spots. should make for a cool handle.
So, here it is. It's a big one, with a 30mm finest 2 band set to 54mm. The handle is 2 1/8" tall and 1 7/8" wide. Thanks for checking it out guys!

Andrew, you left me speechless only because you produced one heck of a classic brush that needs no superlatives to describe it. Good work!

Thanked: 4206Very nice 'grain' on the finished handle Andrew.
Makes me wonder about different coloured cloth layers in the mix, sort of like those acrylic pen blanks with the colours ribboned through em. Wonder how that'd look turned.
Nice project and great results.
Thanks for the 'along the way' shots in both threads.

A thought crossed my mind, what about water ingress? Are you going to put a light coat of varnish on or is the epoxy holding the micarta strong enough to prevent it?
