Thanked: 420625 mm Silvertip in faux tortoise
Happy Valentine's Day gents. Taking the misses out for chow soon but made this today from an order of polyester rod from mascraft.
Stuff was quite brittle and prone to chatter and tear out.
Was going to try to make a rubberset clone out of it, but as the pieces flew I was left coming up with something more elegant and glass shaped.
Has a nice tortoise like shade to it. Will accompany a matching razor still to be restored.
Cheers.

Thanked: 2284Oh Snap!! Looks great Mike and I've been looking for Tortoise rod.
Yes, that polyester rod is a different material altogether. Very brittle stuff. Much different than Acrylic too. Crank up the RPMs is what I have found helps, but even still it's a pain in the Patootie. I'd say you did very well!!Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Thanked: 4206Maybe the speed was the issue, I did keep it slow to avoid heating of the tool, but it might have set me up for the brittle explosions I dealt with.
This is actually a pretty good fit in the hand, and bowl, even though not what I set out to make. And definite tortoise type look so I might order some more of it. The thinner profile of the finished handle helps the shading shine through.
Thanks for the feedback gents.

Looks super cool, Mike! Really old-school. I reckon as you get a new material on the lathe, lessons are learned.
Seems you got the 'handle' on it (pun intended!) and made it work!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 4206Thanks Tom. The shape turned out kinda 60s sci fi to me.
Lathered with it today, and it whipped up a treat.
Figured you took the misses away for the weekend. You were off the grid most of the weekend.

I particularly can see the thumb and forefinger on the 4 layers of taper and the palm against the end.
Face-lathering beast! Very nice."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."

Mike, was that supposed to be the less desirable tortoise? Makes a super looking material for the handle....and scales....Hoo Boy, looking forward to those. Looks like you could have jammed 5 inches of floppy horse in that handle to brush the hair off someone's white nylon cape...uh, like in an old timey barber shop. Excellent save!

That is some great work. Being a big fan of tortoise shell things, I'm quite the envious at the moment.
