I went to San Diego as a kid when my brother graduated from boot camp.
I swear that was the exact view from the hotel window!
Funniest thing was as I went to get ice, the local 'girls' had their 'business' cards up everywhere in that spot.
Gathered a bunch up and took them to my Mom! Big laugh there!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

You're working from a square blank right?
Why not use a tilting vice on that block before it goes on the lathe, and put pin holes through the block at 0, 60, and 120 degrees. Then make a jig that matches the pin holes with steel rod.
Then once the machining is done fill the pin holes out with brass rod. It also wouldn't matter that the holes could mess up on the innitial form cutting as that material will be removed by the milling.

Thanked: 4206Another good idea indeed. Thanks Blake.
Don't have a tilting vice at the home shop, but I see the value of maybe acquiring one down the road. Your idea of rod guides running through the material c/l is pretty cool and may end up incorporated in future build ideas..
My stock starts mostly from square for the wood, but rod for the plastic materials.
Kicking around some fusion of material ideas as well, but that will be on later builds too.
Have my web searches set for old mill machines as I'd love to have a small one of those as well as a Blanchard grinder on my bench before I'm done.

If you are working from rod you cheat with the vice.
Make a base plate with rods that sit at 90 degrees.
Drill the 0 and 60 holes like normal. Then drop in the plate and reverse the rod to get the 120.Real name, Blake

Thanked: 250Mike, do a search for used Hardinge tool room mills. Mine is a model TM horizontal. You can find the Hardinge vertical attachment for it or do like I did and install the Bridgeport model M head in the overarm support. Just a neat little mill that weighs under 1000 pounds and doesn't take up much floor space.
