    Default Knot replacement

Took a turn at replacing a knot today. Got a few questions.
There is a big lump in the middle of this knot. I assume it's to fan the bulb out. Is that normal?
I'd like to set this knot down below the glue line but filing it down loses hairs and exposes more glue. I was wondering if I could soften it with acetone and press it in. Anyone try that?
    Thanks.

Yeah some knots have that bulge above the plug , I try to avoid them myself. I have bought dozen or so different styles of knots from various makers and now avoid that bulge if at all possible. Larger pocket, or a stepped pocket to accommodate is the way to go.

I have not tried the softening technique you are thinking about, not sure how that would go. I believe they are set in polyester resin or some are epoxy resin, not sure if that would work.

This more of a restore on a chrome handle so the pocket is what it is.
