Thread: Temporary Knot Adhesive

I'm planning on writing up a review on a number of synthetic knots. In an effort to keep the variables to a minimum I've ordered a number of 24mm knots and plan on temporarily mounting them in the same style brush handles and at the same depth. I understand that a better comparison would be to mount these knots to the same loft but I'd prefer to avoid having to buy handles for each knot at this point and am hoping to simply swap the knots. To this end I'm curious as to which adhesive everyone would recommend for temporary mount. I know I've seen someone mention hot glue at one point and rubber cement also seems like a possible choice. Ideas, gents?

For a temporary bond, Silicone is what people use. It'll need 12 hours to fully cure, but after you've done your experiment, you should be able to twist it right out of the handle. I wouldn't get to carried away with the amount you use either. Last thing you need is too much and it all comes pushing up and out the sides, and onto the sides of the hairs..... Just a bit of a tip for you.

Thanks, Andrew! I knew you guys would have some great ideas for me. Cure time shouldn't be too much of an issue as I have two identical handles and I plan on putting the knots through their paces during my daily shave, giving me plenty of time to let the silicone set. I have a good idea on how I want to approach my review, having more than a little experience with experimental design, but I'm going to reach out to the rest of the membership for ideas here in the next day or so.

Just a thought, while I know nothing about making shave brushes, I do have some experience in the adhesives and polymer industry. If you just want a temporary hold try a piece of butyl tape rolled between your fingers. https://www.google.com/#q=butyl+tape&tbm=shop

I would be careful using silicone especially if you want to bond over or bridge over. It is impossible to bond anything to. This is why you will never see any silicone in an auto assembly plant or anywhere close to a paint booth.

BTW you guys do really nice work. I like to look at all the cool projects. Keep up the good work.

Very true about the silicone. If you were to try and glue the knot permanently afterwards, you would have to sand the Epoxy plug thoroughly to remove any remnants of the silicone.

Seeing silicone does not stick to silicone either, you would have to remove *all* traces of it in the handle in order to attach the next knot. I like the butyl tape idea.
