Thread: First attempt at brush making.

First attempt may turn out to be a disaster but I'm trying to save it.

I bought about 2 feet of poplar wood on which to practice and I had some good success.






Thought I was ready to work on this cocobolo turning stock I bought just for this purpose.


So it's important to note that I'm working on a metal lathe. I made this jam chuck to make this work on this lathe.



I can see now that there is too much of a taper in it - gets slightly bigger toward the back.

That - coupled with too deep a cut around the bottom curve resulted in a broken piece.





Currently trying to save it by mating it
To a piece of imitation bone.



Pretty frustrating but learning is a process.

It happens, and you're not a wood turner if this hasn't happened to you. I've turned right through the bottom of a 12 inch bow elder burl bowl before. I've done this exact same thing at least 3 times on brushes in the past as well. I think what you're doing to fix it should work out just fine. Some of my coolest stuff has come from mistakes. Just ask Richard aka Razorfeld. Keep at it, it takes practice but you'll get there.

Pretty awesome looking for your first brush handles.
That will be a great save on the one that cracked.

I recently started turning wood and there is a lot to learn and plenty of mistakes to be made. I was watching a video on woodturning and the guy said "If you mess up while turning wood its not a mistake, its a design change." I think thought it was funny that on one of my projects I made three design changes and still had to throw it away! With all the mistakes I've made turning wood I think I will write a book and call it How Not To Turn Wood.............

Overall it looks like you're doing quite well.
