Transforming Colored Pencils
I wonder if any brushmakers here (e.g., HARRYWALLY) have tried using colored pencils and epoxy resin to create some fantastic brush blanks. FB had a video from this guy making something resembling a brush blank in shape but 3x larger. He "aimed" 2 bunches of pencils glued together in the form of giant pencil shape, bound the pieces in a long, octagonal "box," then poured epoxy in the central portion. After turning, this created the most spectacular effect!

Scroll further down this thread for the YT link I found after doing some later Googling of the artist that prompted the snap of the vid pictured above.
The following video is from another artist / cool project.

Hmm... I think I need to pick up some coloured pencils...
It looks pretty spectacular. You'd just have to remember to put a clear coat on it after finishing to keep from decorating your hands each time you use it.
Cool idea!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

That video the snip came from shows him applying some type of clear coat product prior to final finishing. Possibly Ren-Wax? The scene goes by way too fast to tell, but he's able to pour it into a rag so maybe not.
I also noticed he actually offset the centers of the 2 opposing bundles of colored pencils which gives the object a different effect as the eye moves from top to bottom. So cool!!Last edited by Speedster; 08-02-2018 at 04:23 PM. Reason: Additional blathering re: finish coat

That makes sense. I'm at the office and can't watch the video so only had the pictures to go by.
I'm also thinking that if you based it around short pieces of the pencils, sharpened at both ends it might make for even more interesting patterns. I.e. fewer straight bits, more random sharpened end pieces.
I'll try to remember to try this out next time I make some micarta.

After some Googling, I managed to find the video to go along with the project snapshot I first posted w/o having to visit the dreaded FB. This guy is perfectly nutty. Shellawax is the finish product.

HARRYWALLY showed me one he'd done at a meetup a couple of years ago, hopefully he'll come around and show it off.

I seen this a couple years back. It does make for some cool turning pieces.
It's just Sharpening, right?

I have seen that before and agree it is a very cool design/results.

Thanked: 315I watched a video of a bowl? being made some time ago. While it isn't my style, it is beautiful and really eye catching. You could get all sorts of patterns too depending on how you orient the pencils which is really appealing.
