Challenge err... Let's chalk that as "good enough".
It's not completely out of bounds but I'd rather do that :
- with a proper tool (as opposed as undercutting with a skew)
- with harder/denser wood
- with a better lathe scratch that. He's a poor worker who blames his tool. Git gud
This time it was more trying to make the captive ring (which is the actual challenge), and I really skipped a lot of steps, which means that the result is overall mediocre and does not make for a proper "product".
But I'm happy enough I pulled it this far for now. A year ago captive rings were not a thing I thought doable.Last edited by Aggelos; 05-15-2025 at 05:50 PM.
Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.

Thanked: 161If at first you fail, grab a piece of boxwood I suppose.
I actually pulled it O_o
Still can't believe it
It's not perfect or pro level but I love this one, it's going straight to my rotation as soon as I receive a knot that would fit it.
Expect to see it in future SOTDs !Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.

Thanked: 161Been there, done that
The knot is a jewel, the whole thing a smasher. You might have seen it in a récente SOTD.
Anyhow, back to our regular program of making a poor dead tree limb suffer the shame of desecration that is being handled by yours truly when he's just working his scales and arpeggios.
Yes, it's the same branch.
So here's what happened.
I decided to push the skew challenge further. Like, taking risks and trying concave profiles.
I got a stupid catch (when your tool is caught by the wood, the dark side of wood turning), and the bore for the knot which was around the chuck split in several parts.
I brought the thing as far as possible, hoping it would not jump at me (not a very bright idea, but I wear a face plate, so there's that).
And then I thought... You know what ? It was the last piece of the branch. Have fun.
So I tried ebonizing. I later understood my ebonizing was a bit shallow. But it's good fun.
And since I suck at cyano finish... Yes you got it, cyano finish. And I still suck
I can't find any video where it's applied on a profile with sharp cuts, it's always smooth curves.
It tends to accumulate in corners and books and kills all details... I don't know, I have seen some which seem very thin and with a longer cure maybe there's that...
Well, at least the splits seem stabilised. And the thing as been claimed by Princess Tsugnarok since the Queen Mother dubbed it nice looking and pleasant to the touch, so there's that.Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again.
