Thread: My first re-knot

Had a NOS c40 that I wanted to get a nice badger knot in. Got a 22mm finest from TGN.

Looks to me like you did a fine job.

I got the same kind of knot from them . I really like it . It has plenty of backbone , and the tips are nice and soft . I can really whip up a nice lather with it . You did a nice job . How did you get the old knot out of the handle ?

I'm curious about this also... wanting to know how if I ever have to replace the knot in the one I made.

Don't care much about how you go the old knot out of the handle, so much as, how did you go about putting the new one in. Was the handle hollow inside? As in way more hollow than what was required to seat the new knot. Any fine tuning required for fitting etc?

To remove the old one, I used shears to cut back all of the boar as low as I could. I then use a 3/16 bit in my drill press to drill around the entire perimeter of the original plug, going just through to the hollow underside of it. I removed the plug and then used the bit as a grinder of sorts to work down the burrs left over. I moved to a half-round file to work it smooth, then a dowel wrapped in sandpaper to smooth and work the opening to the correct diameter, checking VERY frequently.

To add weight, I added lead fishing weights in the bottom of the handle, which is completely hollow. I then filled with epoxy and set the knot into it. I left the fit just tight enough that the knot couldn't extend more than about 1/32 further than the glue at the base of the knot.
