    Default Another custom silvertip

I finally got one of these completed. I had ordered some brush components about a month ago from the golden nib, including some tru stone turning blanks. This was the first time I had ever worked with tru stone and I must say its awesome to work with. It is very brittle but it sands amazing! I sanded it up 2500 wet, and the polish afterwords was awesome!!! Ill put a link to the original post as well.

Very nice brush! Enjoy it if you are keeping for yourself.
Are you making others for sale? Just curious.

Did you use HSS or Carbide ???? for turning ???

It came out very nice I really like the Tru-Stone I use the slabs for many of my Brush bases and Razor wedges but I haven't tried turning it yet...

This is for a good friend of mine. I may have to try it out before I give it to him. He's a DE shaver and still uses a bore. He wanted to upgrade to a badger, so I told him I'd give him a deal on a custom silvertip. Yes, I will be making more. Originally, I purchased 3 knots, 2 Tru stone blanks. I am selling 2 and was going to keep one. I have an iron wood blank which was a piece my grandfather had for a long time and has also been sitting in my work shop for years. Once I turn that for my last brush, I will have a hard time parting with it.

Its funny you ask. My lathe was also my grandfathers. A full 36'' Delta. He had 3 sets of tools for many different types of jobs. A small set for micro, medium sized, and a full sized set of turning tools. They are all HSS. The lathe currently sits at my fathers house and he does not keep the tools sharp, at least to my likeness. I read about tru stone before I started this project and everyone says you need SHARP tools. So of coarse when I showed up at my fathers to turn this I had to sharpen all the tools I needed before I started.

Did you find that using a Gouge was a bit slow work or you get chipping ??? I have found that my Acrylics need super sharp HSS tools and I even put them in hot water for about 10 minutes before I start the heavy cutting... Once I move to the Skew and the smaller shapers then it goes pretty easy but at first I have to take really small bites....

I have been thinking of trying a Carbide Gouge

I found this forum that is much like ours here with a ton of helpful guys

Yes, exactly. The gouge was slow and it did chip the edges if I got too aggressive. Once I got to the skew it went very nicely. The shaping was the hardest part for sure, and like I said, the sanding was a dream. thanks for that link too Glen.
