Yea, there are all kinds of different systems in different countries. One of the reasons that Canadians should get private out of country health insurance even when traveling to the US is that province will only reimburse you for medical costs at the rate for the same service in Canada. The cost of medical services varies greatly from country to country. No matter the system there is definitely "bloat" involved IMHO.

The same is true, at least in the US, with big oil, the wireless industry and the church (just as an institution... not knocking anyone's beliefs). There just aren't many games in town to choose from, so you pay what they want you to.

Case in point, I just got the mail a few minutes ago. My wife had her gall bladder taken out about a month ago. The latest bill from just the hospital, not counting the surgeon, anesthesiologist, ambulance company and urgent care visit, was for $1,200... adjusted down from over $18,000! And the hospital didn't even perform the surgery! They just loaned the equipment and workshop to the surgeon!

Screwy, when you think about it like that!

Wow, the cost for a gall bladder operation here is zip. My wife had one and the only bill I paid was for the optional phone and TV for her.

My ex gave birth to 3 kids in hospital and again zip cost. One of the kids fell out of a tree and broke his arm. The arm was cast and then there was additional surgery on it after. No bill there either.

There still is bloat even in that system which the provinces struggle to control.

I spent 43 yrs working in Cardiac surg. The problem in the U.S is technology, even if the stats do not support the outcomes,People want the Robots, all the latest gadgets.
That, coupled with Malpractice lawsuits that have no merit is what is behind the problem in my country.
One of my surgeons was sued a few yrs ago,was total B.S, cost millions to fight a case that was thrown out of court in his favor.
All those bux get past down to the consumers eventually.

I agree... frivolous lawsuits and, in more cases than there should be, the fact that so many companies realize that the medical profession is a cash cow are what drives the cost so high. The doctors themselves, while expecting decent compensation, usually just want to see their patients in good health. There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but generally, this has been my experience.

I think next time I'll just keep my mouth shut! I felt really guilty - surely this kind of thing is for genuine cases, not piddly lacerations?

Tetanus boosters are typically good for 10 years. People in high risk jobs (train riders) should get them more often.

Anyone else ever experienced anything like this at their work?

    James.
Your wife was right in sending you to get a tetnus shot; you should take her out to dinner. I know it was a PITA , with paperwork & not much of a macho wound, but here's some food for thought:

"TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes painful tightening of the
muscles, usually all over the body.
    • It can lead to “locking” of the jaw so the victim cannot
open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus leads to death in
up to 2 out of 10 cases."
    Source: Center For Disease Control

Hows your luck running these days.

I would though, tell that H.R. person handling this injury about your inability to wetshave now with that wound & the physiological trauma it has caused you. Get them the name of the nearest barber shop that gives nice hot wetshaves & tell them this will get you mentally sound again & speed up the recovery.
    Wetshaves at company's expense, hey.
