Of what i've learned, whatever military actions the 'west' is or has been doing in the middle east, there's always bunch of radical islamists explaining people it's the Christians or Christianity that is doing these actions against the whole Muslim world. A new crusade.
Of course we know it isn't true but it is easy to raise anger amongst the uneducated and desperate poor people. Specially when you can name 'someone else' to blame.
Sometimes i feel we're not much better either. We have our own wackos who are blaming the whole Islamic world for what some few extreme religious nuts are doing.
Both the Bible and Qaran are such books, that you can find the exact answers you want. No matter if you want to live in peace or harm those you dislike.
I guess that about 90% of all Christian & Muslim people of the world are more or less decent, down-to-earth who give no shit about their religious fundamentalists. Such an agnostic pagan i am but i've never had any religious problems, be it civil life or service, to get along with both christians and muslims.
Wow, this reads like a statement about political parties as well. Though I suppose to some politics is a form of religion...
If folks would take the time to get educated on ANYTHING and see through the bullshit (pardon the term, as I really have no better alternative that sums up my feelings quite so well) that is spewed from so many, we might actually have a chance to get along with each other.
I don't always agree with everyone else, but when I take the time to educate myself on where they're coming from, assuming the're not just blindly going along with the status quo, I can hate their politics/beliefs/stance on something while still maintaining a friendship with the person. It makes it a lot easier to do once I understand their background...
Absolutely. Whenever I need a good compass for politics or religion, I look to this:

"The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history." -- Hegel
The whole thing is a little puzzling. The West did not intervene when Saddam gassed the Kurds in 1988 but waited a couple of years till he invaded Kuwait to take military action the first time. The second time the West intervened and got rid of Saddam on the pretext of his possession of WMDs which turns out he did not have at that time. Now we have Bashar al-Assad very likely gassing his own people and there is a move to outside military intervention. Why now and not in 1988 for the Kurds? It is all smoke and mirrors the reasons given for actions taken. That is not meant to take anything away from the heinous nature of both events. Call me a cynic, believe what you will.

Never could understand Hegel. This statement is a great example of a fallacious argument. It assumes the predicate to be untrue. A bit of circular reasoning IMHO.
What makes (Hegelian)dialectical thinking so difficult to explain is that it can only be seen in practice. It is not a "method" or a set of principles, like Aristotle's, which can be simply stated and then applied to whatever subject-matter one chooses.
I'm a bit out of the loop - what is the US intending to do? Attack Syria?
