Carl, I think the crux is this, particularly in the case of your own family, as I think you may have said originally is, either one member dies, one lives with the guilt of what they did and the rest live with the guilt of it not being them who was killed. Or everyone dies. Sorry I now dont really know where I am going with this now, but I think that it would always be better for some to survive than for all to die.

Thanked: 4828I had a very colorful and wild youth. I think it's a little late to worry about my soul. However it is a big and multifaceted concept with many angles and thoughts.

I know I would do what ever it takes to keep my family and friends safe.

Thanked: 1184For an agnostic I think you have a better understanding of judgment than most who are not. Understanding the words (written by man) about the path laid out by God is never as easy as "do this and don't do that" . In this case Carl wrestles with that written fact that "Thou shall kill". To him is a basic rule /line that can not be crossed for any reason or he is doomed. I would counter this line of thinking by saying "The Lord is most forgiving." Every mistake you make can be forgiven. IF you forgive than so shall he. The big picture is always hard to see all at once and if you use your heart to make decisions you will never go wrong.
Sooo, If my scenario matches yours , I would not hesitate for 1 second to take the life of 1 who is guilty of a major sin to protect even the life of 1 other who is innocent. Shall we not protect the weak ? Shall we not fight evil in every way ? If you are not killing in vengeance, or out of anger, then how could you be wrong ? How could you not be forgiven if you are most forgiving yourself?
Boil it down to "What would God do ? Let all die or strike the evil 1 down ? I am not saying you should make this judgement like you were god, just saying, he would forgive you if you did. If your doing everything else right :<0)Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

A year ago I told my two oldest grandkids that live next door to me that if anyone, and I mean anyone, would hurt any of my grandkids, kids and their mates I would track that person down and let them know what hell on earth is. That said, I am by nature a pacifist, a semi recluse, a person that has looked into several religions and still not religious in the strict sense. I have trouble understanding what goes on in the greater world a great deal of the time. But, again, that said, if it came to my street trying to rid everyone who didn't believe in its message I would take up more than arms to defend my right, and yours, to think and live in a way that does not impinge or negate anyone's rights and beliefs. To me extremists and fanatics, at their core, are damaged people bent on destroying everything they think made them the way they are. I won't call this a rant or a rave. Just a statement of facts and the fact that it sometimes is more confusing than clear and the world seems to like it confusing.

A very easy situation to ponder really.
Humans are born killers. the only thing that holds us back is our society and our laws and social mores and the way we are raised. Strip away that thin veneer and it would be an easy decision.
Of course that scenario would have to be very specific. Like what if you were a hostage with 10 others and the bad guy said to you, if you kill this guy I'll let the rest go free but if you don't I'll kill you all.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

If we reduce it to our own guilt, how many people have died for you to live thru history?
