Carl I am surprised you have chickens in your apple trees. Mine like to scratch in the yard and I never see them in the trees eating moths.

What else would you expect from Carl but weird chickens?

That's because you've never seen an Australian Chicken, they're 61/2 feet tall & look like a well dressed Pterodactyl .

There are also several weed & feed type products at bunnings and the like, that will kill any weeds, but they will also kill any broad leaf lawn like buffalo so your couch may be ok,
I have Oz tuff turf (couch family) out back that they work on can't remember which it was but a few back now, but with buffalo out front I'm screwed with manual removal when I had it, did use spot on and good old manual labour

AROUND the trees I meant. Seriously, locating chickens near your apple trees does allow them to control coddling moth. I believe the larva migrate up the trunk or something... I don't know. Anyway, point being I like to allow a natural balance...
