    Default Rugby Rules

I've been watching what I think is the Rugby World Cup on the Versus channel. Don't know anything about the game but like watching it so far. Can anybody give a briefing on the game? Of course I could look on the internet but what fun would that be.

Sorry Justin can't help you out with the Rugby rules,(it an east versus the rest of the country thing) but if you want to see something a bit more exciting but similar, try and check out some Aussie rules football. Very fast, very rough, high flying and tough. Our new AFL season is just starting. Of course you may not have it on your sports channel, but if you do take a look

Hey John, thanks mate. They use to carry Aussie rules football when I was a teenager --but I haven't seen it in a while. I enjoyed watching it and it kind of caught on with some of my friends --In those days soccer was almost unheard of here and every guy at least played football in his backyard. Yep--use to sit back and watch a little Aussie rules football with the remote control in one hand and a vegemite sandwich in the other (not really but it sounds good). Later,

Aussie football shares one similarity to rugby: they both take leather balls to play.

It was probably the "6 Nations" games you were watching, a series between England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy.

Some good info about the rules of rubgy (union) here.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union

RFU (Rugby Football Union) UK governing body.
    http://www.rfu.com/index.htm

But to summarise, the aim of the game is to score points by getting the ball over the other teams try line at the opposite end of the field. Unlike american football, you can't throw the ball forwards - only sideways or backwards (though you can kick it forwards). So the players have to run the ball forwards.

The ball has to be placed on the ground over the line, rather than dropped or thrown down which doesn't count, this is called a "try" and scores 5 points.

After a try, the team who won the try gets to try for a "conversion". Where the ball is placed on the ground and then kicked over the posts for an additional 2 points.

During play, players can also kick the ball over the posts (a drop kick while running) for a "dropped goal" which scores 3 points. The other way of scoring is a "penalty", where the ball is placed on the ground and then kicked over like a conversion only this time scoring 3 points.

During the game, you have lineouts where the ball is thrown in from the side, scrums, rucks, and mauls. The latter 3 actually do have specific rules but look a lot like a pile of guys fighting on the floor.

I love rugby, it's an extremely rough game although strangely you almost never get any crowd trouble.

Thanks man, appreciate it. The U.S was playing as well so I don't know. I think it was even hosted in the U.S. --wish I knew more but it's all new to me. I found myself able to watch it easy ---unlike soccer which I can appreciate but have to try to like. I think I would have enjoyed playing it if it was available when I was younger.

    Hey Justin,

I had a friend who played Rugby.
He says that the team that has the most broken bones at the end of the game wins

Yeah, Mark. It kind of reminds me of playing "Kill the man with the ball" --but more organized and with a point system. American football is so organized and formation oriented that it kind of losses that free-for-all fun that maybe you had playing it as a kid in your backyard. I'm sure Rugby is highly organized but it seems like people are able to roam more freely and participate on more levels . I had a friend who played Rugby as well and said that it was highly technical --so what do I know.

Sorry about that Mark --- I took a little break. To quote someone, you just hit the quote icon and then edit the quoted part if you need to. I'm still not sure how people do multiple quotes from different posts. Does this answer your question?
