That is, if it has a video expansion slot at all. Not all standard PCs have one. Cheaper ones typically don't.

The best thing to do is to open the case, take a picture of the mobo and post it here.

Assuming that it has an AGP slot, I'd go with an nvidia board from the 6000 series.
Those will set you back about 100 dollars, or maybe even less.
Faster boards will not help you because the rest of your PC will not be able to keep up.
Buying an 8800 would be like installing a ferrari engine in a toyota (and about as expensive).

Whenever I build a new computer, I always go for nvidia because their drivers are top notch, and the boards themselves are very fast and stable.
I build my own to and have always used nvidia there unified drivers are excellent, just built a new one and said what the hell and tried ATI on some grate reviews went with the X1950 I am unpressed. At first my teenage boys gave me crap for not getting nvidia they were even impressed on their games. Now they want we to set it up Crossfire. Words regarding college and are you nuts came out of my mouth. Also so I do not hijack here I would say with his PC a used 5000 series off ebay would be plenty. $30-$50

Wow, I am glad so many people jumped in on this. I left last night after posting and Bam! Anyway take the picture and we'll get ya set. As you can see, the vote is pretty unanimous on the Nvidia. I had a Radeon 9700 in my first laptop. They work well as far as rendering goes, but they just have too many issues with drivers and upgrades. I will never own one again. Luckily, Mac uses Nvidia.
