From the fair warning department: Cangooner is working on a paper to give at a conference in the UK next month, the topic of which is smells in medieval cities. It is a rich vein to mine...

    Favourite useless fact discovered today:

It is known that in 1306 one of the public latrines on London Bridge had at least two entrances. We know this because some dude escaped a creditor by exiting by one door, leaving the creditor awaiting his exit at the other door.

Ever been chased by 3 German Shepherds and a Chihuahua. The Chihuahua was leading the pack. Just happened to me. Fierce little dog.

    Makes me wonder sometimes.
I don't know - this explanation from 1341 helps clear things up nicely...

"Be it remembered, that the sterling [silver penny] must weigh 32 grains of corn [i.e. wheat] in number, from the middle of the ear; and to the quarter of an ounce go 160 grains in number; and to the half ounce go 320 grains; and to the whole ounce go 640 grains, the ounce, that is to say, of twenty sterlings: and to the quarter of the pound go 1920 grains in number; and to the half pound go 3840 grains; and to the pound of 20 shillings sterling go 7680 grains in number, divided into 12 ounces. And the weight of two pounds, which amounts in number to 15360 grains, makes the quart of liquor. And the weight of four pounds, which amounts in number to 30720 grains, makes the pottle. And the weight of eight pounds, which amounts in number to 60440 grains, makes the gallon. And the weight of thirty-two pounds, which amounts in number to 245760 grains, makes the old half bushel. And the weight of sixty-four pounds, which amounts in number to 491520 grains, makes the bushel of wheat, of the ancient standard. And the weight of 366 pounds, which amounts in number to 19266180 grains of wheat, makes the half quarter. And the weight of 512 pounds sterling, which amounts in number of grains of wheat to 3932160, makes the measure of one quarter of eight bushels."

The strange thing is ...The Shepherds are afraid of the wild turkeys...?? That Chi-Wa-Wa could care less.
