Berlin Zoo's abandoned Knut has become a front page media darling, but an animal rights activist insists he would have been better off dead than raised by humans.

A German zoo has been told it should let a baby polar bear known as "cuddly Knut'' die after it was rejected by its mother.
Knut and his twin brother were abandoned shortly after birth in December by 20-year-old Tosca, a former performing polar bear at an East German zoo.
The twin died in freezing conditions but Knut was saved and has since been hand-reared by Berlin Zoo zookeeper Thomas Doerflein, who sleeps by his side, bottle-feeds him and even plays Elvis Presley songs to him on a guitar, according to German news reports.
Reuters says three-month-old Knut has become an unofficial Berlin city mascot and has also starred in a climate change campaign by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.
But the animal has sparked debate over whether it is right for a human to nurture a polar bear.
Animal rights activist Frank Albrecht told Germany's Bild newspaper: ``Hand-rearing a polar bear is not appropriate and is a serious violation of animal rights.
"In fact, the cub should have been killed,'' he said.
His view was backed up by the head of another zoo who has watched two hand-reared animals struggle to cope after being inevitably separated from their human carers.
"One should have had the courage to let the bear die then [when Knut's twin died],'' Aachen Zoo boss, Wolfram Graf-Rudolf, reportedly told a German newspaper.
"Each time his keeper leaves him, and he can't follow, he will die a little.''
The BBC said it was not unusual for animals to be put down after being abandoned by their mothers.
Last December a baby sloth was put down at Leipzig zoo after it was rejected by its mother, it said.
However Berlin Zoo has rejected calls for Knut's killing and says he is strong enough to shortly go on public display.
"We are keeping Knut,'' Berlin Zoo's vet, Andre Schuele, told the BBC.
"He's staying alive. Knut was a healthy baby bear when we found him and so there was no reason for us to put him down ... And there's certainly no reason to do so now.''
He said Knut was being left alone for a couple of hours each day and was slowly being weaned off the bottle to help him gain his independence.
He will eventually be introduced to other polar bears at a different zoo, the vet said.

Comment: I knew there was a reason I disliked animal rights activists... It started with the ill informed campaign against muelsing of sheep and this has just reinforced it...

I love animals. Squirrels, rabbits, deer..... baked, fried or barbecued.....

It's all good.

I heard this one on the news today.
Ridiculous.

It's not that I have anything against animal rights activists per se, but sometimes it seems they pick the wrong battles.

I applaud their efforts to end unnecessary cruelty to e.g. greyhounds, circus animals etc, but cases like this are only damaging to their image, even though technically they may be right.

Muelsing and crutching, now there is a topic worthy of discussion.

True.

Neither are plesant appearing procedures and undoubtedly cause large ammounts of pain to the sheep.

The alternative (fly strike) however is utterly hedious leading to a slow, lingering and pain filled death.

Exactly. And I didn't make it to the top of the food chain only to become a vegetarian.

Sorry to disillusion you, but you're not at the top of the food chain. The polar bear is. Just because you're crafty enough to turn almost anything into a food source doesn't mean you're on top. You still need to eat a large amount of vegetable matter in your diet.

Now the polar bear ... this is not only a predator like other predators. This is an animal, a mamal at that, which actually feeds on other predators; seals primarily. He really is at the top of the food chain. Even the lion only eats herbivores ... or bits of my friend Gemma. (ouch, harsh)

I go now to research crutching and the like and reinforce my lifestyle choice as a vegetarian. I'm sure I won't like it either, but if I had to, I'd compomise. I don't have to compromise my principles today. *whew*

Our family eats red meat maybe once a month. Chicken and fish more often. To me it's not so much about the cruelty to animals but the impact that raising, feeding, processing and transporting lamb and beef has on our environment.

They actually grow faster than that and would be quite dangerous to be around within three years time. I saw a doc on these two twin polar bears whose mother had died or something. They were raised by hand until they were about two or so and one of them almost injured their care giver during feeding time simply because they were afraid she would take the bottle away. Needless to say, they were without direct human contact shortly after that. I wonder how such animals fare when returned to the wild. Must be tough not having Mom to show you how to catch seals. That's likely why they intend to keep this little guy in a zoo. (isn't he adorable?) Good thing we have modern zoos, eh?

Does anyone know how Polar Bears taste? I know Black Bear is very good in sausages and stews, but I think Polar Bear might have a more gamey flavor due to diet. I've also heard repeatedly that Grizzlies and Alaksan Browns are usually very badly flavored because of all the long-dead crap they eat.

"Vegetarian" is the ancient Indian word for "Bad Hunter".

Vegitarians ?? PFFT please at least my food has a chance to run away. What the hell is broccoli supposed to do to defend itself? How do you know vegitables don't scream when bitten.

Any wild animal raised by humans is likely to have a short life and meet an untimely end in the wild. Even animals that don't have the disadvantage of human tutelage often fail to reach maturity because nature doesn't play favorites and doesn't forgive mistakes and virtually every living thing eats other living things in order to survive, so life and death is all just part of the daily routine.

True, Ma Nature is a cruel beeyatch. But, still, this only reinforces my belief that the PETA crowd and others like them are nonsensical :cen :cen :cen LUNATICS!!!

I was surprised at how many Americans call themselves hunters when they equate hunting to sitting safely on a platform in a tree, taking pot shots at deer with a big ass rifle.

They should call themselves deer assassins or somthing like that.:w

Deer snipers, perhaps. Not wanting to actually walk around after the deer doesn't come as a surprise. I've seen people in parking lots sitting in their cars waiting for somebody else to pull out of a parking space next to a store when less than 25 yards/meters away are numerous empty spaces. Meanwhile, they're oblivious to the fact that at least a half dozen cars are backed up into the street behind them :rant: It shows they're not only lazy but self centered as well. We Americans are quickly becoming (Have become?) a nation of fat, lazy slobs. Oh, well.... It happened to the Romans too.

P.S. Before all you hunters start flaming me for not understanding the first thing about hunting I do realize there are good reasons for using tree stands. But I'm sure that's a topic for another thread.:D

I like to assassinate them with a recurve bow shot with fingers and no sights. :)

But I used to take them with shotguns regularly, too. I always hunted on the ground with a shotgun and usually shot them while they were running. In the end, the Bambi-burger all tastes the same; mighty fine eating. :)

But yeah... you have to shoot them with something. They run to fast to be clubbed like a baby seal.

You do know that hasn't been done for decades, right? I think the anti-seal hunt activists refuse to give up on the sexy image of poor baby seals dying. I'm still on the fence for the seal hunt debate, but I wish like hell they'd tell it like it is and stop misleading people.

It's hard to conjure up a more horrifying image than a big eyed silver-haired seal looking up at someone that's about to club it to death. It's an image the ARA's use as often as possible because it does carry a powerful emotional punch. I guess all's fair in love and war. :(

AFAIK they still do that. It was on the news last year. the ARAs follow the hunters 'to bear witness' or something but they are not allowed to intervene.

They even showed footing during the news, so I think that baby seals are still being clubbed to death.

I was pretty sure that happened, too, Bruno, but I couldn't remember for certain. I know there was a hubub about it, but couldn't remember if it was the ARA's trying to prevent it (with old footage) or that seal clubbing was back in full swing (no pun intended). Seems to me it was 2 years ago, though.

I believe it's very likely you've been mislead. I encourage you to find and provide some, any proof. I saw that on the news last year too and they were adult seals.

There you could be right. I know baby seals were mentioned because the whole point of clubbing is that the skin is not damaged, and baby skins are of higher quality than those of adults because of less wear.

Since you are a vegitarian I suspect you have your facts better organized than I have.
