The world I would love to live in.

Nope, I'm 37 years old but like to consider myself fairly open minded and find the field of Sociology to be fascinating. Unfortunately, 1) I tend to be a bit blunt and 2) the field of Sociology pays crap so I work for the feds and repair Navy ships.

From personal experience I can look back on my 8 years in the military and think of the good times I had. If I take a minute to be honest with myself, I can also remember how I absolutely hated my last 3 years and probably wouldn't of pissed on some of my shipmates if they were on fire. Time can mellow a lot of things.

As for "Golden ages' Many existed before our time. They did have their fault but they did have advantages. If those faults could have been worked out (and they could have) then things would have been even more "Golden". But there is not and never will be a Utopia and that is Futility and Folly on our arrogant part.

I agree completely. There is no single factor that determines who we are or how we relate and interact with the world, but I will stick to saying that your childhood home life is a very important factor in who you grow up to be. Some people who come from bad situations follow in those footsteps while others "rebel" and go out of their way to try and do better for themselves.

Along the lines of what Birnando said, one mans golden age is another mans hell.

I actually will agree more with Pix as we have proven quite often how quickly things can be forgotten both bad and good even within one generations time. If you didn't live in a particular time you were not there and can only give judgment via history book which is why we were supposed to listen to our Elders to learn ,not blame them. Just as we critisize the Elder Generations, so too shall we be critisized when we age. Don't beleive me...wait and see.

I lived in that time that pixel described ,, it was a better time like or not ,, we didn't lock our doors till the early 70,s and as a family we spent time together , yes todays generation may have come from us but they were sent to schools that taught them that we were not good parents because we spanked and demanded they respect each other,and I could go on and compare but it would take all night to type ,, and we that were soldiers , most of us adjusted quite well, so I,m pretty sure we didn't make the country a worse place to live, we now live in a society that expects to be given without working for it, and if you argue that how come now we have a large part of our population that makes a career out of holding their hand out ,, oh and now its acceptable to come to this country and not even try to do it the right way, they are rewarded for being illegal,,, that the end of my rant ,, I,m jusy a little opinionated also ,,, tc

In WWI they called it 'shell shock.' In WWII they called it 'battle fatigue'. It was probably around when Alexander conquered the then known world, and before him. I was also born in 1948 and do feel nostalgic for a time when a man worked, made enough to have a house, a car or two, the women of the house stayed home and raised the 2 kids and there was enough $ left to send the kids through college and retire comfortably.

At least that is the Norman Rockwell depiction of 'the American Dream' that we grew up with. I didn't grow up that way, and that is just the cards that were dealt to me. I did alright because, as much as people bad mouth LBJ there was opportunity back then, even for a grammar school dropout, to learn a trade and make a decent living.

It was also the time of the USA being an essentially Aparthied society. Even after Brown vs Board of Education schools were largely segregated. Hence the bussing, afirmative action. So the 'golden age' wasn't as bright for some Americans as it was for others.

Finally, if you assess the living conditions of Americans, and other nationalities, over a couple of hundred years or more, you find that times of peace and prosperity were realatively short lived. Very few generations of people since the industrial revolution, i.e. 'modern times', have lived without hard times during some of their sojurn in this world of time.

PTSD was called shell shock in the first World War; so it has been around probably forever. Most soldiers do adjust well, but you don't hear about them cause they have reintegrated into the community. You may not have had to lock YOUR door but what about someone who was African American living in Alabama? I am a millennial and I don't expect a hand out; I am sorry to say I resent that comment about my generation. I don't know of anyone who would pass up a good job to live on food stamps; it would be too hard to survive. As for immigration, I say let everyone come in we need good people and hard workers. Help them succeed to help us succeed. A man should have the freedom to go wherever his feet take him barring private property. My whole point is why can't we just let people be free? If you are unhappy the tree got cut down... move. You have to respect others freedom like you respect your own. I strongly disagree with nazism, but I will defend someone's freedom to partake in it. We have to take the good with the bad, but generally there's a lot more good.
