Thanked: 284Though I would like to be prepared for much longer term, I've tried to save enough that will get us through a scenario of an earthquake or man made disaster that would prevent us from leaving and without water.
I just feel like being on city water is being on thin ice. If an earthquake disrupts deliver of water even for a couple days, things are going to get nasty real quick.
I keep supplies in the car also in case my wife and kids are stranded for a night for some reason, or even a few hours.
I admit I love the prepping shows on tv too.I love living in the past...

I think it's wise to have maybe a weeks supply of food and water and other necessities because if there is a disaster it will take about that long to get help but if some real disaster like that mega volcano under yellowstone goes off you would just be prolonging the agony if you had say a one year supply. Not only that but once the hoards left the cities your cache wouldn't be safe cause you would just be overrun.
Of course where I am in the far end of nowhere we have already prepared and have enough for our community to last for years. Since there is only one way up the mountain and we've set it with C-4 and have the machine gun nests peppered all over the side of the mountain we be pretty safe. If a few hardy souls get through the landmines will take care of them and since Los Alamos ain't too far we got them mutants they experimented with.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 13246Things that are proved throughout history tend to catch my attention..
"The Rules of Three" - If you have to Ask or Google it, I seriously have to doubt your ability to survive outside your apartment and away from the internet you should probably stick to playing X-Box
"Mankind is always but 9 meals away from Anarchy" - There are many variations of this saying, but the basic premise is always the same in the idea the the veneer of Civilization is pretty thin indeed..
Alfred Henry Lewis (January 20, 1855 – December 23, 1914) was an American investigative journalist, lawyer, novelist, editor, and short story writer.
17 October 1896, Denver (CO) Post, “Further Facts in the Case of Mark Hanna,” pg. 6, cols. 6-7:
Those of us who are well fed, well garmented and well ordered, ought not to forget that necessity makes frequently the root of crime. It is well for us to recollect that even in our own law-abiding, not to say virtuous cases, the only barrier between us and anarchy is the last nine meals we’ve had. It may be taken as axiomatic that a starving man is never a good citizen.
@RoyalCake Your statement about "City Water" might hit home with nearly 150k Detroit residents, just Google it if you are interested...

Since google is my friend, for anyone besides me, that needed it, I'll save you the trouble ...... The Rule Of Three | PreppingToSurvive.comBe careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 44I've never heard the term "prepping", must be an American thing but will probably hit our shores in due course. To tell you the truth when I read the thread title I assumed it involved lather, shave oil and hot water

I like the second to last paragraph:
The Rule of Three is not set in stone. There may be situations where finding water is more important than building a shelter. Every survival situation is different and you must use the most important tool you have with you at all times – your brain.
So, again rule number one - use your brain.

Around here we call it a bug out bag. Medications, clean dry clothes, raw honey. bleach to purify any water we might find. My prepper list changes as I become more aware of the types of threats, natural disasters in my 300 mile radius. travel light when push comes to shove if you cant carry it , you are a sitting duck .But hey I live within 15 miles of Detroit ground zero and 20 miles from Fermi nuclear power plant . I have mutiple scenarios to be concerned about. But being aware and common sense go a lot farther than a pile of stuff and no way to use it.
