Hurricane Katrina was one that folks here in the US should really look at as things got ugly. Cops seized weapons from folks trying to protect what was theirs (I learned to have more than one weapon & not all your eggs in one basket) and you may need to fend for yourself for up to 30 days. I live in the central US, so as far as natural disasters it would be a tornado & those are localized. I read that book that Glen mentioned "One Second After". Knowing what I do about nuclear weapons, that one spooked me a bit as it's a story that "could" happen. If it does, God help us. Man is so VERY dependent on electricity. My family and I can make it for somewhere around 30 days, looting would begin somewhere around 7-10 days.

Ask yourself, honestly, how far would you go to ensure your and your family's survival? Ponder on it a bit...it would get ugly wouldn't it?

One second after is a great read and a true reality. Some pissant country(like N.Korea) could do that to us in a heartbeat.
Your weapons will not save you nor your 10k rnds of ammo.
People that stockpile guns and ammo,IMO are fools.
30 days food and water, meds as needed, hope for the best, after that, say a prayer and kiss your Azz good bye.Because there will be 10s of thousands coming to take what you have, you cannot win

That's very true & I live in what many of you consider the "sticks" as the closest "city" of 100K or better is two hours drive. First thing those city slickers will do is LEAVE. This would be the "zombie apocalypse".

I worry about this scenario because of all of the unaccounted-for nuclear weapons from Russia...all it would take is the right connections, big $, and some planes. Terrorists come in all shapes and sizes, heck, we have our own here in the US (McVey sp?).

I remember a quote from some action movie that really fits this thread: "Chance favors the prepared mind." This rings true as the brain is the most important weapon/tool any of us have.

Sorry to reboot an old thread, just saw this in a search i did and wanted to add to it. I have watched a few prepper shows, tbh i find that many go waaaaay to far in prep for unlikely events, i saw one that was prepping for the world turning to the walking dead, had steel storage containers welded together in a complex with little shooting holes and numerous escape routes and stockpiles of knives, machetes, swords and food. I have seen ones prepping for nuclear war and a few that were just plain covers for hoarding.
I find much of it a bit obsessive.
I am however a fan of the concept of BOB's (bug out bags, 72 hour bags) basically a good rucksack full of kit, food and water that can be stored in say the trunk of your car giving you the means to keep healthy for a long weekend in the case of an emergency or perhaps walk to safety if you get stranded after a breakdown off the beaten track.
I also have in the past enjoyed watching some youtube videos on this subject, its quite amusing to see what some people deem necessary kit for these situations.

It's good to reboot a old thread once and a while, much better than starting another on the same subject. I love the concept of a BOB too, one is in my suburban right now and I need to make one up for the wife's car. We always have one when we travel for sure!

Some great videos on them, some over the top, some very helpful, even some "in the game" celebrity ones like the Joe Teti 72 hour bag vid.

Up here in the rural PNW right now many of us are ready to bug out because of the fires..

Of course 2 years ago we were ready to bug out because of the flooding..

Being ready is being ready, doesn't much matter the reason same stuff is in the "Valuables Box" still using the same tractor as I used to cut ditches for drainage as I am using now to move deadfall and brush

Prepping / Survival is a skillset...

    My 2 cents;
The vehicle B.O.B. that you talk about, I prefer to call it a "Get Home Bag". A B.O.B. varies in its contents, based upon your individual needs.
Meaning,, its put together based upon your environment, daily routine (very important), physical needs & the vehicle your using(carrying this bag in). The "vehicle bag" is intended to get you home. It is different than a B.O.B. used for evacuation .

A Joe Teti bag may very well have a lot of good tools included in it, but may be lacking for your daily routine. When I plan on driving/renting a vehicle in another state, for example when I travel from Dallas to El Paso, I place a bag in my checked luggage that reflects my needs or concerns for that environment. Water, food can be obtained, when I get the car.
